AUBURN, N.Y. – The fourth-seeded Baldwin Wallace University baseball team hung on to a 3-2 victory over eighth-seeded Westfield State (Mass.) University in the consolation bracket of the NCAA Division III New York Regional, hosted by the State University of New York at Cortland at Falcon Park.

With the win, the Yellow Jackets (32-13 overall) set a single-season school record with 32 wins, eclipsing the mark of 31 set back in 2015.

BW found itself in the consolation bracket after an 11-6 loss to fifth-seeded Swarthmore (Pa.) College while Westfield State (24-18-1) fell to top-seeded SUNY Cortland in extra innings.

Like in the first NCAA Tournament game on Thursday, BW jumped out to a 1-0 lead thanks to a base hit from freshman shortstop Alex Ludwick (Brunswick/Padua Franciscan) that plated an unearned run. Meanwhile, junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference pitcher Danny Cody (Medina/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) was dealing on the mound to hold up the one-run lead. A fielder's choice in the fifth and a single from sophomore first baseman Jacob Bonner (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) in the sixth put the Yellow Jackets up 3-0.

Westfield State finally got to Cody in the sixth inning and plated two runs to come within one run of the lead at 3-2. The Owls also threatened in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded but Cody escaped unscathed as BW clung to a one-run lead. BW had a chance to add another run junior pinch runner Reese Albright (Parma/North Royalton) was thrown out at the plate to end the top of the ninth.

Junior designated hitter Philip Wells (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate) continued his hot hitting during the tournament as he was the only Yellow Jacket to record multiple base hits in the game with three. Senior All-OAC center fielder Chase Knodle (Poland/Seminary) tied the school's hitting streak record as his single in the top of the ninth marked his 24th straight game with a base hit.

Cody threw a career-high tying eight innings, allowing two runs on eight hits with three walks and seven strikeouts as he continues to set the single-season school record with 100 punch outs. Sophomore lefty Spencer Berg (New Albany) notched his second save of the season as he pitched the ninth inning and only gave up one walk.

BW will continue in the consolation bracket of the New York Regional as the Yellow Jackets will take on either No. 2 seed Salisbury (Md.) University or No. 3 seed University of Southern Maine on Saturday, May 19, at 1:15 p.m. at Falcon Park.
