GROVE CITY, Pa. – In the non-conference finale, the Baldwin Wallace University women's soccer team fell 2-1 to Grove City (Pa.) College on College Field.

The first half was pretty evenly matched as each team battled back-and-forth for possession and tried to work the ball up the field. BW (6-2-1) had the game's first look on goal in the sixth minute followed by a corner kick and a shot sent wide of the net. However, Grove City (6-3) made the most of its first shot on goal, taking a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute on a deep ball that rocketed past junior Academic All-OAC goalkeeper Sophia Weidner (Medina). Weidner was able to rebound and keep the Wolverines off the scoreboard for the rest of the period as she recorded four saves.

After Grove City opened up the second half with a quick unassisted goal, the Yellow Jackets responded in the 55th minute when senior three-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC forward Rachel Bender (Massillon/Jackson) found sophomore forward Kortney Marzenski (Parma/Valley Forge) for her first collegiate goal. BW would continue to battle for the remainder of the half, fighting the Wolverines' aggressive defense. The Yellow Jackets best opportunity came in the 86th minute with a series of three shots inside the box. Bender's two shots were saved then blocked followed by a shot from sophomore midfielder Kayla Webb (Brunswick) that was also saved. Having weathered that storm, Grove City held on for the 2-1 victory.

Weidner made a season-high eight saves in her first loss this season. Statistics were almost identical as BW took 19 shots to Grove City's 18, the Wolverine goalie outsaved Weidner 9-8 and both teams each had 10 shots on goal.

BW opens up Ohio Athletic Conference action on the road on Saturday, Sept. 29, when the Yellow Jackets travel to Bexley to take on Capital University at 7 p.m. inside Bernlohr Stadium.
