Women’s Soccer Falls to Host Behrend in Herb Lauffer Tournament Opener

ERIE, Pa. – The Baldwin Wallace University women's soccer team was unable to overcome an early deficit as the Yellow Jackets fell to host Penn State Behrend College 2-0 in the season-opening Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament.

Behrend (1-0) had two good looks on goal early and finished both of the opportunities to complete the game's scoring. Just 53 seconds into the season, Ashlyn Whipple ripped a ball into the back of the BW (0-1) net for a 1-0 lead. Following a couple of corner kicks by each team, sophomore midfielder Kayla Webb (Brunswick) got the Yellow Jackets only look on goal in the half in the 16th minute when she sent her shot wide right. The Lions then moved the ball down the field and, two shots later, added a second goal to their lead in the 20th minute.

Behrend continued to maintain possession in the attacking third but junior Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference goalkeeper Emma Bruno (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bethel Park) kept the Lions off the scoreboard for the remainder of the period with three of her four total saves.

The Yellow Jackets made adjustments heading into the second half and began to control the rhythm, which led to a few more scoring opportunities. Sophomore defender Kortney Marzenski (Parma/Valley Forge), sophomore forward Olivia Muldoon (Middleburg Heights/Berea-Midpark) and freshman defender Anna Wenzinger (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) each had a look at the net, all of which went wide left or wide right. Meanwhile, Behrend struggled with the change of pace and was only able to get off one shot in the final 45 minutes.

BW completes Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament action on Sunday, Sept. 2, against Thomas More (Ky.) College at 12 p.m. Thomas More, who finished the 2017 season ranked fourth in the Great Lakes Region, faced fellow OAC opponent Otterbein University in its opening tournament game.
