Women’s Basketball Knocks Off Marietta

BEREA, Ohio –The Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team closed out its four-game homestand as it won a 74-57 Ohio Athletic Conference game against Marietta College in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

BW (16-3, 9-3 OAC), who swept the season series for the third time in the last four years, had two players score in double figures led by senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC point guard Mackenzie Colombo (Strasburg) as she scored 21 points and was career-best 11-for-11 from the foul line.  Freshman guard Riley Schill (Sheffield Lake/Elyria Catholic) poured in 12 points off the bench.  Senior All-OAC forward Clara Lemmon (Canton/Louisville) grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

Marietta (10-9, 4-8 OAC) was led by junior guard Brooke Borich as she scored a game-high 30 points.

The Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early 14-9 lead in the first quarter when sophomore guard Hannah Fecht (Hilliard/Davidson) knocked down a three-pointer at the 4:55 mark.  BW closed out the opening period on an 8-4 run to take a 22-11 advantage with its last bucket coming on a layup by Schill at 2:35.

The Pioneers started the second quarter on a 13-2 run to tie the game at 24-24 on a layup by Borich at the 6:07 mark.  The Yellow Jackets responded and closed out the stanza on a 16-4 run to take a 40-28 lead into the intermission.   BW got its final points of the opening half when Colombo hit a pair from the charity stripe with 1:20 remaining.

Marietta opened the second half on a 10-2 run to cut the lead down to 42-38 on pair free throws from junior center Jenna Andersen at the 7:08 mark.  The Yellow Jackets answered back with an 11-4 run to push their lead to 53-42 when junior Academic All-OAC guard Katie Smith (Fairview Park/Fairview) split a pair of free throws at 2:44. Each squad scored three points the remainder of the third quarter.

BW opened up the final quarter on a 14-10 run to extend its lead to 15 points at 70-55 when senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC forward Sydney Clark (Parma/Lake Ridge Academy) buried a triple at the 3:29 mark.   The Yellow Jackets outscored the Pioneers by a 4-2 count down the stretch.

BW is back in action on Wednesday, February 1 when it travels to Ada to take on eighth-nationally ranked and OAC leader Ohio Northern University in the ONU Sports Center at 7:30 p.m.   The Yellow Jackets return home to the friendly confines of the Ursprung Gym on Saturday, February 4 when they host an OAC game against Otterbein University at 3 p.m.
