Women’s Basketball Beats Marietta in OAC Opener

MARIETTA, Ohio -- The Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated Marietta College in an Ohio Athletic Conference game by a final score of 63-59 in the Ban Johnson Arena. 

BW (4-0. 1-0 OAC) had two players score in double figures led by senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC forward Sydney Clark (Parma/Lake Ridge Academy) with a game-high 18 points.  Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Clara Lemmon (Canton/Louisville) recorded her fifth career double-double as she scored 12 points and grabbed a game-high and a career-best tying 13 rebounds.

Marietta (6-2, 1-1 OAC) had three players score in double digits led by Shay Lett with 16 points. Amisha Heard contributed 14 points and Brooke Borich added 10 points.

The Yellow Jackets opened the game on a 13-2 run when sophomore forward Rachel Womeldorf (Lewis Center/Olentangy) hit a jumper at the 5:18 mark. The Pioneers closed out the stanza on an 11-9 run but trailed 22-13 after one period of play. 

In the second quarter, BW pushed its lead to 32-21 on a layup by Womeldorf at 3:56.   Marietta used an 12-3 run to close out the first half but trailed 35-33 at the intermission.

The Pioneers started the second half on a 14-2 run to take a 47-37 lead when Jo Herd-Middlebrooks knocked down a jumper at the 3:23 mark.  The Yellow Jackets responded with a 5-0 run to cut the lead down to 47-42 on a three-pointer by freshman guard Tiffany Bentler (North Canton/Hoover).  Neither team would score in the final minutes of the period. 

BW continued the scoring streak as it opened the final quarter on a 13-0 run to take a 55-47 when Clark buried a triple at the 7:01 mark.  Marietta answered back with a 12-0 run to tie the game at 59-59 on a three-pointer by Borich at 1:04.  The Yellow Jackets scored the final four points of the game with Clark hitting three of four free throws with the final one coming with 10 seconds remaining.

BW is back in action on Saturday, December 10 when it travels to New Concord for the first game of a women's and men's OAC doubleheader against Muskingum University on Performance Court at 2 p.m.
