Women’s Basketball Wins Third Straight Road Rivalry Game Over John Carroll

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio –The Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team won its third straight game in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center with a 71-63 Ohio Athletic Conference victory against cross-town rival John Carroll University.

BW (18-4, 11-4 OAC), who won its seventh game in its last eight contests, had three players score in double figures led by senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC point guard Mackenzie Colombo (Strasburg) as she scored a game-high 23 points, which was two points shy of her career-high.  Sophomore guard Hannah Fecht (Hilliard/Davidson) picked up her second career double-double as she scored 13 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.  Senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC forward Sydney Clark (Parma/Lake Ridge Academy) chipped in 12 points.

John Carroll (6-16, 4-11 OAC), who lost its eighth game in its last 10 outings, had two players score in double digits led by senior All-OAC forward Katlyn Spahar as she scored 18 points.  Junior guard Shmoo Pryor contributed 13 points.

The Yellow Jackets opened the game on an 8-4 run when senior All-OAC forward Clara Lemmon(Canton/Louisville) scored on a layup at the 6:38 mark.  The Blue Streaks responded with a 4-0 run to cut the lead down to 8-7 on three-pointer by Pryor at 6:16.   BW answered back with a 12-0 run to extend its lead to 19-7 whenColombo knocked down a pair from the charity stripe at the 1:54 mark.   John Carroll closed out the first quarter on a 6-0 run to cut the lead down to 19-13 on a layup by Pryor with 37 seconds remaining.

The Blue Streaks started the second period on a 5-0 run to cut the lead down to 19-18 on a layup by Sara Sprecher at the 5:25 mark. The Yellow Jackets fought back with a 4-1 run to push their lead to 23-19 on a layup by sophomore forward Rachel Womeldorf (Lewis Center/Olentangy) at 3:18. John Carroll outscored BW, 6-5, down the stretch but trailed 28-25 at the intermission.

The Yellow Jackets opened the second half on a 7-3 run to push its lead to 35-28 on jumper by Clark at the 8:15 mark.  BW pushed the lead to 54-40 on a jumper by Colombo at 2:04.  The Blue Streaks closed out the third quarter on a 4-2 run to cut the lead down to 56-44 on a layup by Spahar with 34 seconds remaining.

John Carroll cut the lead down to 10 points at 58-48 in the early fourth quarter when Spahar scored on a layup at the 8:25 mark.  The Yellow Jackets went on a 6-2 run to extend the lead to 64-50 on a layup by Womeldorf at 5:32. The Blue Streaks answered back with a 13-3 run to cut the lead down to 67-63 when Kahrin Spear scored on a layup with 51 seconds remaining. BW scored the final four points of game to secure the game.
