BEREA, Ohio –The Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team continued its undefeated season as it defeated Ohio Wesleyan University by a final score of 77-66 in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.
BW (8-0) is undefeated to open the season for the first time since the 2005-06 season when it opened that season at 9-0. The Yellow Jackets also won 22 of their first 24 games that campaign.
Ohio Wesleyan (3-7), who has lost three straight games and seven of its last eight, falls to 5-12 in the all-time series versus the Yellow Jackets, including two straight losses. The Battling Bishops had two players score in double figures led by senior guard Megan Kuether as she scored a game-high 24 points. Freshman forward Ella Karras added 13 points.
BW opened the game on a 16-3 run when sophomore forward Rachel Womeldorf (Lewis Center/Olentangy) had the putback at the 5:44 mark. Ohio Wesleyan outscored the Yellow Jackets down the stretch by a count of 7-6 but trailed 22-10 after the opening quarter.
In the second period, BW came out an 8-2 run to push its lead to 30-12 on a three-pointer by freshman guard Riley Schill (Sheffield Lake/Elyria Catholic) at the 8:00 mark. The Yellow Jackets extended its lead to first-half high 23 points at 42-19 on a layup by freshman guard Kara Marshall (Copley/Akron Archbishop Hoban) at 4:09. The Battling Bishops closed the first half on a 4-2 run but trailed 44-23 at the intermission.
Ohio Wesleyan opened the third quarter on a 12-2 run to cut the lead down to 46-33 when Kuether buried a three-pointer at the 5:01 mark. BW responded with a 6-2 run to take a 52-35 advantage on a triple from Smith at 3:45. The Battling Bishop used a 10-4 run to close the gap to 56-45 when Lisa Zeller hit a pair from the charity stripe at 1:26. The Yellow Jackets got the final points of the third stanza when Clark scored on a layup with 44 seconds remaining to lead 58-45.
BW is back in action on when it travels to Latrobe, Pennsylvania for a non-conference game against St. Vincent College in the Robert S. Carey Student Center at 5:30 p.m.
