Colombo’s Game Winning Three Lifts Women’s Basketball Past Heidelberg in Overtime

BEREA, Ohio – Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC point guard Mackenzie Colombo (Strasburg) hit a game-winning three-pointer with five seconds remaining in overtime to lift the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team to a 68-67 OAC victory against Heidelberg University in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

BW (15-3, 8-3 OAC), who swept the season series, had three players score in double figures led by senior forward All-OAC and Academic All-OAC forward Sydney Clark (Parma/Lake Ridge Academy) as she scored 19 points on a career-best five three pointers.  Colombo added 12 points and sophomore guard Hannah Fecht (Hilliard/Davidson) chipped in with 10.

Heidelberg (6-12, 3-8 OAC) had two players score in double digits led by senior guard Theresa Jackson with a career-high and game-high 30 points on a perfect 10-10 shooting from the free throw stripe.  Junior guard Maggie Davault added 11 points to go along with a career high seven rebounds.

The Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early lead after a traditional three-point play by freshman guard Riley Schill (Sheffield Lake/Elyria Catholic) to give BW a 16-6 lead at the 4:16 mark of the first quarter.  The Yellow Jackets 19-12 first quarter lead was sparked by a barrage of threes from Clark, who tied a single game career-high mark of four three pointers in the first quarter alone.  The Student Princes battled back most of the second quarter to cut the BW lead to one, 31-30, entering the intermission, after a pair of free throws from Jackson finished off a 6-0 run for Heidelberg.  Jackson led all scorers in the first half with 14 points to go along with six rebounds.

The back and forth battle continued into the second half until a 7-0 run by the Student Princes was capped off with a Carli layup at the 6:36 mark to give Heidelberg a 57-49 lead.  BW quickly answered with a 9-0 run of their own after a Colombo layup at the 2:32 mark giving BW a 58-57 lead.  Four quarters was not enough tonight as the teams would carry a 60-60 score into overtime.  A tight start to overtime left the two teams locked at 65 until a pair of free throws from Jackson would give the Student Princes a 67-65 lead with 13.9 seconds left.  A quick outlet left Colombo open on a game-winning corner three to give BW the win 68-67.

The Yellow Jackets close out their four-game homestand on Saturday, January 28 when it hosts an OAC game against Marietta College in the Ursprung Gym at 3 p.m.  Fans can follow all of the action live at http://www.bwyellowjackets.com/x/11nwr.
