Women’s Basketball Upended by Mount Union

BEREA, Ohio –The Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team had its 11-game winning streak snapped as it dropped a 72-62 Ohio Athletic Conference game against the University of Mount Union in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center. 

BW (11-1, 4-1 OAC), who won the most games to open a season since the 2003-04 season when it started at 12-0, had two players score in double figures led by senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC forward Sydney Clark (Parma/Lake Ridge Academy) as she scored a team-high 19 points, grabbed a game-high tying eight rebounds and had a game-high and career-high four steals. Senior point All-OAC and Academic All-OAC point guard Mackenzie Colombo (Strasburg) chipped in 16 points and dished out a game-high tying three assists.

Mount Union (8-4, 3-2) had three players score in double digits led by Abby Bartoszewicz as she scored a game-high and career-high 25 points.  Rachel Tinkey tallied 12 points while Erin White contributed 10 points and grabbed a game-high tying eight rebounds. 

The Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early 14-2 lead on a layup by sophomore forward Rachel Womeldorf (Lewis Center/Olentangy) at 4:26.   The Purple Raiders responded with a 14-2 run to tie the game at 16-16 on a three-pointer by Bartoszewicz with 32 seconds remaining.  BW took a two-point advantage at 18-16 on a jumper by Colombo with eight seconds remaining, 

Mount Union opened the second quarter on a 14-2 run to take a 30-20 lead on a layup by Kelsey Scott at the 6:30 mark.  The Purple Raiders outscored the Yellow Jackets 12-10 down the stretch to lead 42-30 at the intermission. 

BW started the third quarter on a 5-0 run to cut the lead down to 42-35 on a three from Clark at the 9:15 mark. Mount Union closed the half on a 25-12 run and got a three-pointer by Bartoszewicz at the buzzer to lead 67-47 after three periods of play. 

The Yellow Jackets outscored the Purple Raiders by a 15-5 count in the fourth quarter and got their final basket on layup by Colombo with 22 seconds remaining to make the score 71-62.  The Purple Raiders went 1-of-8 from the field and  3-10 from the foul line in the final stanza.

BW is back in action on Saturday, January 7 when it travels to Wilmington for an OAC game against Wilmington College on Hermann Court inside the Fred Raizk Arena at 3 p.m.
