Softball Offense Comes Alive in Second Straight OAC Sweep

TIFFIN, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team swept its second straight Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader and won a season-high fourth consecutive game as it defeated Heidelberg University in a rescheduled Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader on the Frann's Field.

BW (14-14, 7-7 OAC) and Heidelberg (20-10, 10-4 OAC), who came into the day tied for the OAC lead, were originally scheduled to play on Tuesday afternoon but the games were postponed due inclement weather and field conditions.

The Yellow Jackets, who played their longest game of the season, won the opener in nine innings by a final score of 6-4, including scoring the go ahead run in the top of the seventh and eventually scoring the winning two runs in the top of the ninth.  BW exploded for a season-high tying 13 runs in the nightcap and posted its second shutout of the season with 13-0 victory in the five innings.

In game one, the Yellow Jackets scored six runs on 10 hits as they plated three runs in the fifth, one in the seventh and two in the ninth.  Heidelberg scored four runs on nine hits it scored two runs in the fourth and one run in the fifth and seventh innings.

The BW offense was led by junior catcher/designated player Sami Minor (North Royalton) as she knocked in the go ahead run in the seventh and had the game-winning run batted-in (RBI) in the ninth.  Minor was 2-for-5 with a double, three RBIs and a run scored. 

In addition, junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC right fielder Alexis Boledovic (Brook Park/Berea-Midpark) was 2-for-4 with a run batted-in (RBI), run scored and a walk.  Freshman third baseman Alex Dick (Elyria) was 2-for-4 with a RBI and run scored. Senior designated player/pitcher Sam Mott (Frewsburg, N.Y./Central) was 2-for-4.  Junior All-OAC shortstop Erica English (North Olmsted) and sophomore center fielder Macy Leach (Westerville/Central) had the other two hits while English knocked in the insurance run in the ninth.

In the circle, freshman left-hander Abby Cosart (Lima/Bath) won her team leading fourth OAC game, including her second straight as pitched a career-high nine innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits with two strikeouts.

In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored a season-best 13 runs on a season-high tying 16 hits as it plated one run in the first, three runs in the second, four runs in the third and five runs in the fifth.  The Student Princes, who were run ruled for only the second time and shutout for only the second time this season, did not score a run on two hits.

The BW offense was led by Boledovic as she went 3-for-4 with a career-high four RBIs and three runs scored.  English was 3-for-4 with a RBI and run scored.  Leach, who tied a career-best in hits, was 3-for-3 with a career-high three runs scored.  Minor was 2-for-3 with a double and a career-best five RBIs. Mott was 2-for-4 with a run scored.  Freshman first baseman Mackenzie Milligan (Cleveland/St. Joseph Academy), who tied a career-high with two hits, was 2-for-3 with a RBI and run scored.

In the circle, Mott won her second straight OAC game and hurled her fourth career shutout as she did not allow a run on just two hits with six strikeouts and no walks.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, April 21 when they travel to Bexley for an OAC doubleheader against Capital University on Clowson Field at 1 p.m.   BW closes out the regular season portion of its schedule on Saturday, April 28 when it hosts an OAC and Seniors' and Parents' Day doubleheader against Otterbein University on the BW Softball Field at the Roehm Athletic Complex at 1 p.m.
