Softball Earns First OAC Sweep with Victories over Muskingum

BEREA, Ohio – On a day that started out like an actual spring day but later turned into what Clevelanders have termed "sprinter", the Baldwin Wallace University softball team swept its first Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader of the season as it defeated Muskingum University in a rescheduled doubleheader on the BW Softball Field at the Roehm Athletic Complex.

BW (12-14, 5-7 OAC) and Muskingum (20-8, 6-6 OAC) were originally scheduled to play last Saturday afternoon but the games were postponed three times until this afternoon due cold temperatures and wind chill factors.

The Yellow Jackets held on for a 5-4 victory in game one and scored four runs in the final three innings to capture the nightcap by a final of 5-3.

In game one, BW scored five runs on eight hits as it scored two runs in the first inning, one each in the second, third and fifth innings.  The Fighting Muskies scored four runs on eight hits it scored one run in the first and third innings and scored two runs in the seventh.

The Yellow Jacket offense was led by junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC right fielder Alexis Boledovic (Brook Park/Berea-Midpark) as she went 3-for-4 with a double, run batted-in (RBI), a run scored and a stolen base.  Sophomore first baseman Hannah Albrecht (Riverside, Calif./Chaminade College Prep) was 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and run scored.  Sophomore second baseman Alex Kozich (Avon) was 1-for-3 with her first career triple on the US mainland and a RBI.  Senior designated player/pitcher Sam Mott (Frewsburg, N.Y./Central) and junior catcher/third baseman Sami Minor (North Royalton) each had a double.  Junior All-OAC shortstop Erica English (North Olmsted) had a RBI and run scored.

In the circle, freshman left hander Abby Cosart (Lima/Bath) won her team leading third OAC game and improved to 4-4 on the season as she allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits with one strikeout and a career-high three putouts.

In game two, BW scored five runs on eight hits as it plated one run in the third and fourth innings, two in the fifth and added an insurance run in the sixth.  Muskingum scored three runs on seven hits as it scored its first run on a homer in the first and two runs on a home run in the fourth.

The Yellow Jacket offense was led by English, Minor and Mott as each had two base knocks.  English was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.  Minor was 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored.   Mott was 2-for-3 with a double. Kozich and freshman right fielder Hailey Owens (Lakewood) had the other two base hits.

In the circle, Mott won her fifth game and her first OAC game of the season as she allowed three runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts and one walk.

BW is back in action on Thursday, April 19 when it travels to Tiffin for a rescheduled OAC doubleheader against Heidelberg University on Frann's Field at 3 p.m.   The Yellow Jackets remain on the road when they travel to Bexley for an OAC doubleheader against Capital University on Saturday, April 21 at 1 p.m.
