Men’s Swimming and Diving Drops a Pair of Season Opening Meets

DELAWARE, OHIO – The Baldwin Wallace University men's swimming and diving team opened the 2016-17 by dropping a pair of dual meets on Saturday and Sunday.

BW fell to Wilmington in an Ohio Athletic Conference on Saturday by a score of 107-97 and then dropped a non-conference meet to Ohio Wesleyan University on Sunday by a final score of 135-86.   

Against Wilmington, the Yellow Jackets were led by freshman freestyler Matthew Bartek (Amherst/Marion Steele) as he won the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:09.43 and the 400-yard freestyle in a time of 4:33.28.  Bartek was also a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay team along with junior All-American stroker Tyler Thompson (Broadview Heights/Brecksville-Broadview Heights), freshman freestyler Greg Shaw (Colorado Springs, Colo./Manitou Springs) and sophomore freestyler Tyler Allison (Napoleon) in a time of 1:51.47.

Also earning victories were senior All-OAC freestyler Jacob Burk (Bowling Green), Thompson and ShawBurk won the 800-yard freestyle in a career-best time if 9:31.81.  Thompson won the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:08.38 and took second in the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:16.55.   Shaw captured the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1:00.95 and was second in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 25.71 seconds.

Against Ohio Wesleyan, BW was led by junior All-OAC diver Jon Levin (Olmsted Falls) as he won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events with 158.10 and 149.50 points, respectively.  Thompson picked up a victory in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 59.56 and he was second in the 100-yard individual medley with a time of 56.86. 

Also against the Battling Bishops, Shaw had a pair of runner-up finishes in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly with career-best times of 23.14and 54.39.  Bartek was second in the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 56.99 and took third in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:50.22.  Allison was the runner-up in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 53.31.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, October 29 when they travel to Bethany, West Virginia for a pair of dual meets against Bethany College and Hiram College in the John J. Knight Natatorium at 1 p.m.   BW opens the home portion of their schedule on Saturday, November 5 when it hosts an OAC meet against Manchester (Ind.) University in the BW Natatorium at 1 p.m.
