BW Men’s Lacrosse Falls to Thiel, 12-7, in Last Home Game

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's lacrosse team lost to Thiel (Pa.) College, 12-7, tonight (Wednesday, April 24, 2013) in the Yellow Jackets' last home game of the season at Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium.

The loss drops BW to 5-5 overall, including a 4-1 home mark in 2013.  Thiel improves to 7-5.

Sophomore midfielder Luke Riemenschneider (Rocky River), senior midfielder Kyle Sepesy (Parma/ Cleveland St. Ignatius), and freshman attack Andrew Madden (Lakewood/ St. Edward) each recorded two goals.  Riemenschneider took a season-high 17 shots and senior midfielder Andy Caballero (Dallas, Texas/ Hillcrest) matched a season high with 13.  Freshman attack Vinny Carson (Cleveland/ Bendictine), who picked up a game and season-high eight ground balls, registered two assists and upped his team-high total to 20.

Junior Carmen Papa led the Tomcats with five goals and three assists.

The Tomcats took a 3-0 lead with first-quarter goals from Papa, junior Francis Ahia, freshman Alex Casile.

BW and Thiel traded goals in the second quarter and the Tomcats took a 5-2 into the break.  Sepesy cut the lead to 3-1 at the 10:27 mark with his 11th goal of the season, assisted by Riemenschneider. Madden was credited with a goal after Thiel scored on its own net at 8:17 to cut the score to 4-2.

Freshman Tim O'Shea and Papa netted goals for the Tomcats in the second stanza.

Madden and Sepesy each scored their second goals of the game during the third quarter, but four different Tomcats also scored and sent Thiel into the fourth quarter with a 9-4 lead.

Caballero closed the gap to 9-5 at 12:03 of the fourth quarter, but the Yellow Jackets would not close the gap any closer than four points.

Papa scored twice more in the last period to secure the win for Thiel.

Riemenschneider scored at the 8:43 and 5:04 marks, his team-leading 21st and 22nd goals of the season.

Despite the loss, BW outshot Thiel, 57-33, held a 41-36 advantage in ground balls, and won 14 of 21 face offs, all taken by junior midfielder Jake Opincar (Middleburg Heights/ Parma Padua Franciscan).

Freshman Jake Harders (Rocky River/ Lakewood St. Edward) logged all 60 minutes in goal and made eight saves for the Yellow Jackets.  Sophomore Ryan Weldon had eight saves in 60 minutes of action for Thiel. 

BW closes its inaugural season Saturday, April 27 at Bethany (W.Va.) College.  Game time is slated for 4:30 p.m.
