BW Men’s Lacrosse Ends Season With 20-11 Win at Bethany

BETHANY, W.Va. – Senior midfielder Andy Caballero (Dallas, Texas/ Hillcrest) and freshmen attack Andrew Madden (Lakewood/ St. Edward) and Vinny Carson (Cleveland/ Bendictine) each recorded hat tricks to lead the Baldwin Wallace University men's lacrosse team to a 20-11 win against Bethany (W.Va.) College today (Saturday, April 27, 2013) at Bison Stadium in the final game of its inaugural season.  BW's 20 goals were the most since a 21-11 win against Houghton (N.Y.) College on March 8.

The win improves BW to 6-5 and secures a winning record for the Yellow Jackets in its first season in program history.  Bethany falls to 4-11.

Caballero and Madden each scored four goals, and Carson had three.  Caballero also notched his seventh assist of the season and Carson registered his team-high 21st.  The hat trick was the third for Caballero, playing in his final game as a collegian, and team-high fourth for Madden, who ends the season having scored a goal in three straight games.

Sophomore midfielder Luke Riemenschneider (Rocky River) and freshman midfielder Steve Wozniak (Strongsville/ Parma Padua Franciscan) each scored two goals and tallied an assist.  Sophomore midfielder Chris Nurse (Westlake) and junior attack Tim Hamm (Baldwinsville, N.Y./ Baldwinsville) also scored twice.  Freshman midfielder Jake Opincar (Middleburg Heights/ Parma Padua Franciscan)recorded his seventh goal and sixth assist of the season, and recorded both in the same game for the first time since March 8.  Opincar also won 22 faceoffs and collected a game-high 23 ground balls, both of which are season highs.

Kyle Arrington led the Bisons with five goals and one assist.

Riemenschneider, who ends the season having scored a goal in seven straight games, scored twice in the first quarter and keyed a 5-2 Yellow Jacket run to start the game.  Riemenschneider's pair of scores upped his season total to a team-leading 24.

BW tacked on five more goals in the second stanza, including two from Caballero, and took a 10-4 lead into halftime.

Nurse scored both his goals in the third quarter, and Madden and Hamm added scores as the Yellow Jackets began the second half on a 4-0 run and took a 14-4 lead.

The Bisons scored five straight goals in under three minutes to cut the gap to 14-9 before Madden and Caballero closed the third quarter with scores and up BW's lead to 16-9.

Bethany scored twice early in the fourth period to pull to within 16-11, but Carson, Madden and Caballero combined to score four insurance goals and secure a winning record for BW.

BW outshot the Bisons, 51-39, held a 48-35 advantage in ground balls, forced a season-best 24 turnovers, and won a season-high 23 of 34 faceoffs.
