BW Men’s Lacrosse Falls to Hope (Mich.)

PONTIAC, MICH. – Sophomore midfielder Luke Riemenschneider (Rocky River) and freshman attack Vinny Carson (Cleveland/Benedictine) each scored a pair of goals, but the Baldwin Wallace University men's lacrosse team lost to Hope (Mich.) College, 14-9, today (Saturday, March 2, 2013) at the Ultimate Soccer Arena in Pontiac, Mich.
 
The loss drops BW to 1-1 overall.  Hope begins its season 1-0.
 
In addition to Riemenschneider and Carson offensively, freshman attack Andrew Madden (Lakewood/St. Edward), junior midfielder Steve Humbert (Liberty Township/Lakota East), freshman midfielder Jake Opincar (Middleburg Heights/Padua Franciscan) and senior midfielders Andy Caballero (Dallas, Texas/Hillcrest) and Kyle Sepesy (Parma/St. Ignatius) each scored.  Junior attack Jason Roberto (Milford, Mich./International Academy) and freshman midfielder Steve Wozniak (Strongsville/Padua Franciscan) each recorded assists.
 
Josh Kamstra scored a game-high six goals for Hope.
 
The Yellow Jackets took a 1-0 lead after Humbert scored an unassisted goal, and tied the game at 2-2 when Riemenschneider scored an unassisted goal of his own at the 5:41 mark of the first quarter.
 
Hope scored four consecutive goals, including two by Josh Kamstra, and took a 6-2 lead midway through the second quarter.
 
OpincarCarson and Sepesy each scored goals in the latter half of the second stanza and pulled BW to within 6-5 by halftime.
 
BW opened the third quarter on a 2-0 run and took a 7-6 lead following unassisted goals by Caballero and Riemenschneider just six minutes into the period.
 
Kamstra scored two goals to spark a 3-0 run to close the third quarter as the Dutchmen retook a 9-7 lead, then increased their advantage to 11-7 after Nicklas Raycraft and Parker Osterink scored goals within nine seconds of each other early in the fourth quarter.
 
Madden and Carson each added scores in the fourth quarter.
 
Freshman Jake Harders (Rocky River/St. Edward) logged all 60 minutes in goal and made 21 saves.  Daniel Flavin played all 60 minutes in goal for the Dutchmen and registered 11 stops.
 
Hope outshot the Yellow Jackets, 57-31, won the ground ball battle, 50-36, and controlled 14 of 22 face offs.
 
The Yellow Jackets return to action Friday, March 8 when they host Houghton (N.Y.) College at Pinnacle Sports in Medina, Ohiop at 6:00 p.m.
