BW Men's Lacrosse Shuts Down Franciscan, 13-2

BEREA, Ohio – Eight different Yellow Jackets scored goals, freshman goalie Jake Harders (Rocky River/ Lakewood St. Edward) allowed a career-low two goals, and the Baldwin Wallace University men's lacrosse team defeated Franciscan University, 13-2, today (Saturday, April 6, 2013) at Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium.  Harders held the Barons scoreless for a stretch of nearly 39 minutes before exiting the game.

The win improves the Yellow Jackets to 4-3 overall.  Franciscan drops to 1-9.

Freshman attack Andrew Madden (Lakewood/ St. Edward) led the attack with a game-high three goals, his third hat trick of the season.  Freshman attack Vinny Carson (Cleveland/ Benedictine), sophomore midfielder Luke Riemenschneider (Rocky River), and senior midfielder Kyle Sepesy (Parma/ Cleveland St. Ignatius) each scored two goals.  Carson registered a game-high four assists.  Freshman midfielder Steve Wozniak (Strongsville/ Parma Padua Franciscan) also recorded two helpers.

Carson has tallied two or more assists in five of seven games this season, and has at least one goal and one assist in four of his last five contests.

BW took a 2-0 lead after goals by Madden at the 13:52 mark of the first quarter and junior midfielder Jason Roberto (Milford, Mich./ International Academy) at 9:58.

Franciscan cut the lead in half on a goal by freshman Daniel Fay at 6:54, then knotted the score, 2-2, at 13:06 of the second quarter when freshman Sebastian Olsen scored.  Sophomore Patrick McNamara and Fay had assists.

The Yellow Jackets responded by going on a 5-0 run to end the first half and take a 7-2 lead into the break.  Riemenschneider, Carson, senior midfielder Andy Caballero (Dallas, Texas/ Hillcrest), freshman midfielder John Grau (Cleveland Heights/ Cleveland Benedictine), and Sepesy each scored.  Grau's goal was the first of his career.

BW outscored Franciscan, 6-0, in the second half, keyed by two goals from Madden, a goal and a pair of assists from Carson, a score from junior attack Tim Hamm (Baldwinsville, N.Y./ Baldwinsville), and the first career assist for junior defender Korin Stubbs (Warren/ John F. Kennedy).

The Yellow Jackets took 12 or more shots in each quarter and outshot Franciscan, 59-13.  BW also held a 42-30 advantage in groundballs, cleared 22 of 26 attempts, and won 12 of 18 faceoffs, including seven by freshman midfielder Jake Opincar (Middleburg Heights/ Parma Padua Franciscan).

Harders logged 56 minutes in goal, made two saves, and improved to 4-3 for the Yellow Jackets.  Junior Ray Caraballo (Cleveland/ St. Ignatius) relieved Harders at the 4:30 mark of the fourth quarter and made one save in his first collegiate appearance.  Senior Evan Malchano collected 23 saves in 60 minutes of action for the Barons.  

BW returns to action Saturday, April 13 in a rematch against Franciscan at 1 p.m. in Steubenville.
