BW Men’s Lacrosse Beats Calvin in First Game in School History

MEDINA, OHIO – Freshman attackman Andrew Madden (Lakewood/St. Edward) scored a game-high four goals and three other Yellow Jackets recorded multi-goal games to lead the Baldwin Wallace University men's lacrosse team to a 10-7 win against Calvin (Mich.) College in the first game in school history today at Pinnacle Sports Complex in Medina, Ohio.

In addition to Madden offensively, freshman attackman Vinny Carson (Cleveland/Benedictine), sophomore midfielder Luke Riemenschneider (Rocky River) and junior midfielder Steve Humbert (Liberty Township/Lakota East) each scored two goals.  Junior attackman Jason Roberto (Milford, Mich./International Academy) and Carson provided two assists apiece.

Tim Marco registered a hat trick for Calvin, and Greg Boer and D.J. Vander Baan added two goals each.

Madden scored the first goal in program history--assited by Carson--at the 13:49 mark of the first quarter, and Carson assisted Humbert on another goal five minutes later as the Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early 2-0 lead.

Marco and Boer combined to score four straight goals for Calvin, with two each to close the first quarter and open the second quarter, as the Knights took a 4-2 lead by the 10:07 mark of the second stanza.

Undaunted, Carson scored at the 9:21 mark on an assist from freshman midfielder Steve Wozniak (Strongsville/Parma Padua Franciscan) and Madden tied the game at 4-4 with his second goal of the day on an assist from junior defenseman Randy Grein (Hudson).

BW opened the second half with three straight goals to take a 7-4 lead, capped by a Carson goal at the 5:33 mark.

Both teams traded three goals apiece in the game's final minutes, including the game-winner by Riemenschneider at 2:52.

Freshman Jake Harders (Rocky River/Lakewood St. Edward) logged all 60 minutes in goal, faced 33 shots, and made 13 saves.  Drew Sroczynski played all 60 minutes in goal for Calvin, defended 38 shots, and registered 10 stops.

The Yellow Jackets return to action Saturday, March 2 when they host Hope (Mich.) College in a 1:00 p.m. game in Pontiac, Mich.
