Men’s Basketball Defeats Bethany (W. Va.) in Non-Conference Finale

BEREA, Ohio -- The Baldwin Wallace University men's team closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 94-71 victory against Bethany (W. Va.) College in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

BW (9-2), who went 6-1 against non-league opponents, had four players score in double figures led by senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Cam Kuhn (Vermilion) as he scored a game-high 22 points.  Senior forward Mike Kaminski (Medina) poured in a season-best 17 points, which was just one shy of his career-high.  Junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard Jay Battle (Gahanna/Lincoln) chipped in 16 points.  Sophomore forward Tyler Colombo (Strasburg/Tuscarawas Central Catholic) contributed 10 points.

Bethany (3-8) had three players score in double digits led by sophomore forward Chaice Truex as he scored with 21 points. Senior guard Calique Jones recorded 18 points while senior center Liam Davis added 10 points.

The Bison jumped out to a 11-7 lead when Jones split a pair of free throws at the 16:41 mark.  The Yellow Jackets responded with a 10-5 run to take a 17-16 lead when junior guard Kyle Nader (Vermilion) knocked down a pair from the charity stripe at 12:57. After the game was tied at 24, BW used a 6-2 run to take a 30-26 lead when Kuhn buried a three-pointer at the 8:13 mark.  Bethany fought back with a 7-2 run to take a 33-32 lead on the layup by senior center Liam Davis at 5:25. The Yellow Jackets answered with a 10-0 run to take a 42-33 lead when Colombo split a pair of free throws at the 2:48 mark.  BW, who was 15-of-16-from the foul line, closed the half on a 4-2 run to lead 46-35 at halftime.

The Yellow Jackets opened the second half on a 14-2 run to take a 60-37 lead when Kaminski buried a three-pointer at the 16:11 mark. The Bison responded with a 9-2 run to cut the lead down to 62-46 on a jumper by Truex at 13:32. BW pushed its lead to as many as 29 points on two occasions with the last coming at 89-60 when sophomore guard Michael Quiring (Brunswick) hit a pair of free throws at the 4:17 mark   Bethany would come no closer than 22 points on four occasions with the last coming at 91-69 when Davis split a pair of free throws at 2:31.

The Yellow Jackets return to Ohio Athletic Conference action on Wednesday, January 3 when they host the University of Mount Union in the Ursprung Gym at 7 p.m.
