Men’s Basketball Handles Alfred State (N.Y.) in Home Opener

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball opened the home portion of its schedule as it defeated Alfred State (N.Y.) University by a final score of 78-51in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

BW (2-1) had three players score in double figures led by junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Jay Battle (Gahanna/Lincoln) as he scored 13 points.  Senior All-OAC guard Cam Kuhn (Vermilion) poured in 12 points and sophomore guard Michael Quiring (Brunswick) chipped in 11 points. In addition, Kuhn grabbed a game-high seven rebounds and dished out a game-best six assists.

Alfred State (1-2) had two players score double figures led by senior guard Alexshay Pearce as he scored a game-high 15 points. Junior forward Marcus Rhett added 10 points

The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 6-2 lead on three-pointer from Battle and the last coming from Quiring at the 16:37 mark. The Pioneers responded with a 4-0 run to tie the game at 6-6 on layup by Dante Jordan at 14:17. BW answered with a 12-4 run to take a 18-10 advantage on the layup by Kuhn at the 8:15 mark.  The Yellow Jackets outscored Alfred State, 15-10, down the stretch to lead 33-20 at the intermission.  BW got its final points on a jumper at the first half buzzer by Kuhn.

The Yellow Jackets opened the second half on a 7-0 run to push their lead to 40-20 on a slam dunk by senior All-OAC forward Jake Fetherolf (Norwalk) at 17:47. Over the next five minutes, both teams would score seven points apiece to make the score 47-27.  The Pioneers got the last bucket from Owen Spencer on a layup at the 14:19 mark.  BW responded with a 7-4 run to extend the lead to 54-31 on a trey from Battle at 10:02.  The Yellow Jackets kept up the offensive attack and pushed their lead to 64-32 on a triple from sophomore guard Zach Cebula (Brunswick) at the 6:33 mark.   Alfred State outscored BW 19-14 down the stretch but it fell short 78-51.  The Yellow Jackets got their final points on a three-pointer from freshman guard Kyle Lyon (Parma) with 36 seconds remaining,

BW returns to action on Monday, November 27 when it travels to Angola, Indiana for a non-conference game against Trine University in Hershey Hall at 7 p.m.   The Yellow Jackets open up OAC play on Saturday, December 2 when it travels to Marietta College to take on defending OAC Champion and No. 13-nationally ranked Marietta College in the Ban Johnson Arena at 3 p.m.
