Men’s Basketball Falls to Ohio Northern in OAC Game

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team was defeated by Ohio Northern University by a score of 94-76 in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

BW (9-11, 4-9 OAC) had three players score in double figures led by junior All-OAC guard Cam Kuhn (Vermilion) with 20 points.  Senior guard Zack Brandy (Hudson) and freshman guard Michael Quiring (Brunswick) each added 13 points each.

With his 20 points, Kuhn moves into 17th place on the all-time BW scoring list with 1,292 points passing Dick Retherford (1949-523). He needs 91 points to pass Kevin Krakowiak (2010-2014) for 15th place with 1,383 points.

Ohio Northern (13-7, 11-2 OAC) had five players score in double figures led by senior guard Devon Allen as he scored a season-high tying 27 points with seven three pointers. Sophomore center Ryan Bruns contributed 18 points to go along with a game-high 10 rebounds.  Junior guard Joey DiOrio added 16 points, seven rebounds, and five assists.  Notably, senior center Aron Thress and junior guard Nate Burger chipped in 11 and 10 points respectively.

In the first half, the Polar Bears opened up the game with a 15-7 lead after a three pointer from Allen at the 16:15 mark.  Ohio Northern would own the lead the entire first half with their largest lead coming at the 7:57 mark after another three pointer from Allen to give the Polar Bears a 37-22 lead .  The first eight minutes of the game belonged to Bruns who contributed 12 of the team's first 25 points, but the rest of the first half was owned by Allen who would sink seven three pointers (7-10) to enter the intermission with 21 points and a 53-44 lead for his team.  The Yellow Jackets first half was highlighted by a four point play from Quiring at the 2:50 mark that cut the Polar Bears lead to single digits 48-39.

After a couple quick scores from the Polar Bears to start the second half the Yellow Jackets would answer with a 9-2 run of their own after a lay up from sophomore guard Jay Battle (Gahanna/Lincoln) closed the lead to 59-53 at the 14:34 mark.  A 10-4 run from Ohio Northern would extend their lead to 69-57 after a jumper from senior guard Konnor Baker at the 11:51 mark.  A late game push from the Yellow Jackets would get the BW within eight points after a layup from Quiring at the 2:37 mark.  The Polar Bears would go 8-8 from the free throw line to finish off the game.

BW will be back in action on Saturday, February 4 when it travels to Westerville for an Ohio Athletic Conference game against Otterbein University in the Rike Center at 2 p.m.
