Men’s Basketball Wins Overtime Thriller Versus Muskingum

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team defeated Muskingum University by a score of 89-83 in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

BW (9-8, 4-6 OAC), who has won three of its last five games against Muskingum (10-7, 4-6 OAC), had three players in double figures led by sophomore guard Jay Battle (Gahanna/Lincoln) as he scored a game-high 23 points and went a career-best 14 for 14 from the free throw line. Junior All-OAC guard Cam Kuhn (Vermilion) scored 17, junior All-OAC forward Jake Fetherolf (Norwalk) contributed 16 points and eight rebounds and junior forward Mike Kaminski (Medina) added 13 points off the bench.

With his 17 points, Kuhn jumps to 19th on the all-time BW scoring list with 1,240 points. He needs 143 points to pass Kevin Krakowiak (2010-2014) for 15th place with 1,383 points.

The Fighting Muskies had four players score in double figures led by Senior forward Joshua Keyes as he recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Marcus Dempsey scored a team-high 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds, sophomore guard Jarrell Marsh contributed 14 and senior guard Joshua Glass added 12.

In a back and forth first three minutes BW took a 7-6 lead when Fetherolf knocked down two free throws at the 16:50 mark. Muskingum went on a 22-10 that was capped off when junior forward Jacob Geller to give the Fighting Muskies a 29-16 lead with 7:36 left in the half. The Yellow Jackets outscored Muskingum 17-11 to cut the Fighting Muskies lead to 40-33 at halftime.

In the second half, Muskingum extending its lead to 55-39 when Glass made a three-pointer at the 14:53 mark.  BW answered with a 29-13 run that tied the game up at 68-68 when Kuhn buried a three with 14 seconds on the clock to send the game into overtime.  

In overtime, the Yellow Jackets gained its first lead since the 16:50 mark in the first half when Battle knocked down two free throws to make the score 72-70 with 4:19 left in the extra period. BW outscored the 17-13 in the final four minutes of play. Battle led the way with 12 of his 23 points coming in the overtime period.

BW will be back in action on Wednesday, January 25 when it travels to Tiffin for an OAC game against Heidelberg University in the Seiberling Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
