Men’s Basketball Drops OAC Contest to Capital

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team was defeated by Capital University, 75-62, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

BW (6-3, 1-3 OAC) had three players in double-figures led by junior All-OAC guard Cam Kuhn (Vermilion) with a game-high tying 20 points. Senior guard Zack Brandy (Hudson) and junior forward Mike Kaminski (Medina) each chipped in 10 points. Junior forward Jake Fetherolf (Norwalk) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

With his 20 points, Kuhn moved to 24th on the all-time BW scoring list with 1,126 points.  He now needs 33 points to pass Brandan Schuler (2004-08) for 20th place with 1,159.

Capital (8-3, 3-1 OAC)  had two players score in double figures led by sophomore guard Joey Weingartner as he scored a game-high tying 20 points, including  shooting 4-of-5 from three-point land. Freshman forward Ganiyu Yahaya contributed 16 points on 7-of-9 from the field.

The Yellow Jackets took an early 3-0 lead before the Crusaders went on a 17-5 run over the next eight minutes to take a 17-8 lead over the of eight minutes with the help of two three-pointers by Weingartner with the last coming at the 8:12 mark. BW was able to control the Capital early push when Kuhn dropped in a layup with 3:00 left in the first half to cut the Crusader lead to 29-16. Capital lead 32-18 going into the locker room.

In the second half, the Crusaders pushed their lead up to a game-high 22 points on a layup by freshman Tyler Jamison at the 10:51 mark of the second half. The Yellow Jackets went on a 12-2 run to cut the lead down to 53-41 when Fetherolf drained a three-pointer at 8:44. BW cut the lead down to eight points at 67-59 on a Kuhn layup with 1:29 remaining.  Capital closed the game on an 8-3 run to secure the victory.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Thursday and Friday December 29 and 30 when they host the BW Holiday Invitational in the Ursprung Gym. BW opens the invitational against Adrian (Mich.) College on Thursday at 6 p.m. The invitational consolation and championship games will be contested on Friday at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.
