WILMINGTON, OHIO – Senior guard Antonio Bowman scored 16 points and led three Quakers in double figures as the Wilmington College men's basketball team defeated Baldwin-Wallace College, 59-56, today (Saturday, December 10, 2011) in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Fred Raizk Arena. This was the second game of a men's and women's OAC doubleheader.
With its win, the Quakers improved to 4-4 overall and 3-0 in the OAC while B-W fell to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the league..
In addition to Bowman for the Wilmington, sophomore center Ben Vonderhaar had 12 points and sophomore forward Malcom Heard II had 10 points. B-W was led by sophomore guard Kevin Krakowiak (Valley City/ Parma Heights Holy Name) wth 13 points.
The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring on a layup by sophomore forward Kyle Payne (Brunswick) with 19:08 left in the half to take a 2-0 lead. The Quakers answered immediately and tied it at 2-2 with a basket of their own on a layup by sophomore forward Ben Vonderhaar at 18:42.
B-W retook the lead at 18:19 when senior All-OAC guard Promis Cabbil (Elyria) scored a three-pointer for a 5-2 lead. Wilmington then cut the B-W lead to 5-4 when junior guard Brandon Candella scored a jumper at 16:25.
The Yellow Jackets put together a 5-0 run, capped by a layup by sophomore guard Grant Fairhurst (Ashland) with 14:24 left in the half, for a 10-4 lead. Wilmington answered with a 4-0 run of its own, capped by two free throws by Heard with 13:20 left in the half, to cut the B-W lead to 10-8.
B-W would then extend its lead to 12-8 at 12:51 when sophomore center Aaron Selmek (Delaware/ Columbus St. Francis deSales) scored a layup. Undaunted, Wilmington would go on a 5-0 run, capped by a layup by senior guard Tyler White with 10:45 left in the half, to take its only lead of the stanza at 13-12.
The Yellow Jackets would answer back with an 11-2 run to take a 23-15 lead with 6:10 left when sophomore guard Jaron Crowe (Mentor) canned a three-pointer.
After each team got a basket to make the score 25-18, Wilmington then went on a 4-0 run, capped by a jumper by Heard, to cut the lead to 25-22 with 2:46 left in the half. The Yellow Jackets ended the half on a 4-0 scoring run of its own, capped by a layup by Fairhurst with 1:55 left, for a 29-22 halftime lead.
In the second half, B-W gained its largest lead of nine points at 40-31 with 14:46 left when junior guard Ben Umbel (Poland/ Seminary) made the second of two straight jump shots. The Quakers then scored nine of the next 11 points to close to within two points at 42-40 with 10:30 left when Bowman made a three-pointer.
Wilmington tied the game at 42-42 with 9:45 left when Candella made a steal, drove the length of the floor and made a layup. The Qauker run grew to 15-2 and they took a 46-42 advantage with 9:00 left when Vonderhaar scored on two consecutive possessions. B-W finally ended the run when sophomore center Tyler Ferrell (Brunswick) scored on a layup to make the score 46-44 with 8:30 remaining.
The Quaker lead grew back to four points at 48-44 when freshman guard R.J. Leppert made a steal and scored on a layup at 6:10, but B-W cut it back to two points at 48-46 with 5:56 left when Payne canned a pair of charity tosses. Umbel tied the game at 48-48 with 5:00 left when he made a steal and then a subsequent driving layup.
With 4:25 left, Bowman gave Wilmington a 50-48 lead when he made two foul shots. Payne tied it at 50-50 again at 4:05 when he made a nifty move on the inside to score. Undaunted, Bowman gave the lead back to the home team at 52-50 with 3:50 left when he made a jump shot.
B-W regained the lead at 53-52 with 2:54 left when Fairhurst canned a long-range three-pointer. Heard tied the game at 53-53 with 2:45 left when he made the first of a two-shot foul. Following an offensive rebound of Heard's second free throw, he then gave the Quakers a 55-53 lead with 2:30 remaining when he scored via a layup.
Wilmington took a 57-53 lead at 1:38 when Vonderhaar made a steal and drove the floor for a layup. B-W closed to 57-56 with 46 seconds left when Krakowiak made a three-pointer.
With 39 seconds left, Leppert made the first of two foul shots to gain a two-point lead at 58-56. B-W had a chance to take the lead, but a Krakowiak triple with 20 seconds left was blocked and the ball went out of bounds off of Payne. Having to foul, B-W did with 10 seconds left and sent Bowman to the line for two shots. He made one of two shots to give Wilmington a 59-56 lead. B-W had one last chance, but a Payne three was off the target at the buzzer and the Quakers survived.
B-W is back in action on Saturday, December 17 when it will travel to New Concord to take on the Fighting Muskies of Muskingum University at 3:00 p.m.
