Jackets Fall to The University of Mount Union, 62-57

ALLIANCE, OHIO  – Sophomore guard Kevin Krakowiak (Valley City/ Parma Heights Holy Name) with a a team-high 22 points as the Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team fell to the University of Mount Union, 62-57, tonight (Wednesday, February 15, 2012) in a key Ohio Athletic Conference game in the McPherson Academic & Athletic Complex.

With its loss, B-W drops to 15-9 overall and 10-7 in the OAC and ended a four-game winning streak. With its win, Mt. Union improves to 10-14 overall and 6-11 in the OAC and swept the season series from B-W.

In addition to Krakowiak, sophomore guard Grant Fairhurst (Ashland/ Senior) had 11 and freshman guard Jaron Crowe (Mentor) scored seven points and grabbed six rebounds.

Mount Union was led by freshman guard Nate Jacubec, who scored a game-high 24 points.

The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring at 19:04 mark when Krakowiak made a three-pointer for a 3-0 lead. Following a three-pointer by Purple Raider junior guard Justen Little at 17:45 to tie it at 3-3, B-W had two 5-0 runs that sandwiched a Mt. Union basket to build a 13-5 lead at 13:18 when Krakowiak canned his second triple. A pair of Krakowiak foul shots at 12:06 moved him into double digits and gave B-W a 10-point lead at 15-5.


Mt. Union sophomore guard T.J. Gillespie ended B-W's run with a layup at 12:02 to make it 15-7. The Purple Raiders continued their run with four more points to make it 15-11 when junior forward Matt Kiger grabbed an offensive rebound and scored at 10:07. B-W ended its four and one-half-minute scoring drought when junior forward Chris Ameen (Broadview Heights/ Walsh Jesuit) canned a trey at 7:37 to make it 18-11.


After Kiger made two foul shots at 6:01 to cut the lead to 18-13, Krakowiak canned his third triple of the stanza at 5:55 for a 21-13 advantage. After a Krakowiak jumper made it 26-18 with 3:28 left, Mt. Union got two straight hoops to cut the lead to 26-22 at 2:30 when Gillespie made a jumper. Fairhurst improved the lead to seven at 29-22 when he made a three-pointer at 1:22. Mt. Union sophomore forward Jimmy Darnley made a foul shot with 53 seconds left to make it 29-23 and that's the way the first half ended.


In the second half, Mt. Union drew to 29-25 when senior forward Jimmy Wood made a jumper at 19:21. Following a free throw by B-W sophomore center Tyler Ferrell (Brunswick) at 19:04, Wood scored again at 18:38 to close to 30-27. B-W regained a six-point lead at 33-27 with 18:10 left when sophomore All-OAC forward Kyle Payne (Brunswick) scored, was fouled and made his foul shot for a three-point play.


After Mt. Union closed to 33-29, Krakowiak scored at 16:45 to push the lead back to six at 35-29.  The Raiders then outscored B-W 10-2 to take their first lead of the game at 39-37 with 12:24 left when Jacubec canned a three-pointer and the lead grew to 41-37 when junior guard Keith Williams made a steal and then went the length of the court for a layup at 11:30.


B-W freshman guard Jaron Crowe (Mentor) ended the run with a trey at 10:35 to make the score 41-40 and the Yellow Jackets regained the lead at 43-41 when Krakowiak nailed another triple at 8:18 and increased it to 45-41 when he made a jumper at 7:53. Following a Kiger foul shot, B-W sophomore backup center Aaron Selmek (Delaware/ Columbus DeSales) made tw of his own at 6:37 for a 47-42 lead.


Mt. Union drew to 47-44 when Jacubec made two foul shots at 6:15, but Fairhurst canned a trey at 5:51 to make it 50-44. Mt. Union senior forward Matt Weir countered for the Raiders when he grabbed an offensive rebound and scored at 5:46, but Fairhurst counteted with two foul shots at 5:08 to rebuild a six-point lead at 52-46.


The Purple Raiders received a Jacubec jumper at 4:59 to close to 52-48 and Weir made two foul shots at 3:06 to make it 52-50. Following a missed B-W foul shot, Ferrell grabbed an offensive rebound and scored at 2:33 to make it 54-50, but Wood countered with a triple at  2:23 to make it a one-point game at 54-53. Weir gave Mt. Union the lead at 55-54 with two foul shots at 1:58 and Jacubec gave the Raiders a four-point lead at 58-54 with a triple at 1:00 and added two more foul shots with 29 seconds left for a 60-54 lead.


A Fairhurst three-point play with 13.5 seconds left drew B-W to within 60-57, but Gillespie made two foul shots for Mt. Union with four seconds left to close out the scoring at 62-57.


The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, February 18 when they host OAC-rival Ohio Northern University in the second game of a women's and men's doubleheader in Berea at 4:00 p.m. The women's game tips off at 2:00 p.m.  Fans can listen to the game live on the internet at

Media and fans are reminded that that tis Saturday's women's and men's basketball doubleheader versus ONU is a televised twinbill on SportsTime Ohio. The women's game will be shown three times on STO. The dates and times are on Feb. 18 at 11:00 p.m. and on Feb. 19 at 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The men's game will be televised twice, on Saturday night at 9:00 p.m. and on Monday, Feb. 20 at 7:00 a.m. B-W has broadcast more of its athletics events on regional cable TV than any other Division III school.


In addition on Feb. 18, the B-W men's team will host the Fourth Annual "Take a Kid to the Game" Day. Children up to the eighth grade will be admitted for free when accompanied by an adult. Prior to its 4:00 tipoff versus ONU, children can have their faces painted by the B-W Cheerleaders or can play games with the cheerleaders and "Stinger", the Yellow Jacket mascot. Following the game, B-W student-athletes and coaches will be available to sign autographs.
