Yellow Jackets Sweep Season Series Against Heidelberg

BEREA, OHIO – Sophomore guard Kevin Krakowiak (Valley City/Holy Name) scored a career-high 31 points to lead three Yellow Jacket scorers in double figures as the Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team defeated Heidelberg University, 80-74, tonight (Wednesday, January 25, 2012) in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center. This was the second and final regular season meeting between the teams.

With the victory, the Yellow Jackets improved their record to 11-7 overall and 6-5 in the OAC while the Student Princes fall to 6-12 overall and 4-7 in the OAC.

In addition to Krakowiak for B-W, sophomore All-OAC forward Kyle Payne (Brunswick) and sophomore forward Tyler Ferrell each added 10 points.  Heidelberg was led by junior guard Dane Givner with 26 points, junior forward Nate Davis contributed 16 and sophomore forward Victor Fortkamp added 14.

The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring, 3-0, when Krakowiak buried a three off the fast break assist from Umbel with 19:30 remaining.  The Student Princes got their first points, 3-2, on a layup by Givner at 19:18.

B-W would then go on a 9-2 run to push its lead to seven points, 11-4, at the 16:01 mark. The run was sparked by Krakowiak andFerrell with four points apiece. 

Heidelberg would go on a 13-4 run over the next four plus minutes to tie the game, 17-15, on a dunk by junior forward Nate Davis with 11:47 left.

The Yellow Jackets would respond with a 5-0 run to regain the lead, 20-17, on a three-pointer by junior Chris Ameen (Broadview Heights/Walsh Jesuit) and a bucket from sophomore forward Aaron Selmek (Delaware/Columbus St. Francis DeSales) at 10:29.

The Student Princes went on a 6-0 run to take the lead, 23-20, on a jumper by freshman forward Bryan Crawford with 8:25 remaining.

B-W would close out the first half by outscoring Heidelberg, 16-12, to take a four point lead, 36-32, into halftime.

The Student Princes would open the second half when Crawford spilt a pair of free throws cutting the lead down to three points, 36-33, at 18:59.  The Yellow Jackets would get a traditional three-point play from Payne with 18:38 left to push the lead to six points, 39-33, at 18:38.

Over the next four minutes, the teams would exchange baskets as Heidelberg would cut the lead down to three points, 43-40, on floater in the paint by Givner with 14:21 left to play.  The Student Princes would then go on an 8-3 lead to regain the lead, 48-46, on a trey by Givner at 11:44. 

B-W would use a 5-0 run to regain the lead, 51-48, as Krakowiak would score on a layup and Payne hit a jumper and split a pair of free throws with the last coming with 10:45 remaining.  Heidelberg would tie the game at 54-54 on a jumper by Fortkamp at 8:41.

The two teams would battle back and forth for the remainder of the half with the Yellow Jackets having their largest lead of eight points, 70-62, on a three-point play by Krakowiak with 4:28 left.  The Student Princes cut the lead down to one point, 74-73 on a pair of free throws by junior guard Quinten Aden Jr. at 40 seconds.  B-W would seal the game as it hit 6-of-6 free throws down the stretch, including four by Ameen

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, January 28 when they will host Wilmington College in the second game of a men's and women's OAC and SportsTime Ohio Doubleheader at 4:00 p.m.    The men's game will air on SportsTime Ohio on Saturday at 9:00 p.m., Sunday, January 29 at 5:00 a.m. and Monday, January 30 at 7:00 a.m. (men's).  The women's game will be broadcast on Saturday at 11:00 p.m.  Fans can listen to both men's and women's games can live on campus radio station WBWC 88.3 FM "The Sting" or via the internet at www.wbwc.com.  The pregame show starts 15 minutes prior to tipoff.  

Media and fans are reminded that the B-W will televise one more men's and women's basketball doubleheader on SportsTime Ohio. The games are on Saturday, February 18 versus Ohio Northern University. B-W has broadcast more of its athletics events on regional cable TV than any other Division III school.
