Two Men’s Basketball Student-Athletes Selected Academic All-OAC

BEREA, OHIO -- Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball juniors Ben Umbel (Poland/ Seminary) and Chris Ameen (Broadview Heights/ Walsh Jesuit) have been selected (Tuesday, March 6, 2012) as Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference student-athletes for the 2011-12 season.

This is Umbel's first Academic All-OAC honor. This season, he averaged 7.5 points and a team-leading 6.2 rebounds per game for the 16-10 overall Yellow Jackets. Umbel shot 50 percent from the field on 76-of-152 attempts and also led the squad with 96 assists and 60 steals. He had his first career-double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds in a 70-65 victory at Ohio Northern University on January 14, 2012 and his second with 15 points and 10 rebounds against Wilmington College on January 28, 2012.

In two seasons at B-W (he transferred after a red-shirt freshman season at NCAA Division I Youngstown State University), Umbel has played in 48 games, including 31 starts, and is averaging 5.5 ppg. and 4.6 rpg. He has 264 points, 225 rebounds, 126 assists, 87 steals and 23 blocked shots.

Umbel has displayed his academic excellence as a biology/ pre-med major who carries an outstanding 3.97 grade point average. The Jacket Scholar is a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society and was a nominee for CoSIDA Academic All-District 7 honors.

Ameen also earned his first Academic All-OAC honor. In his third season for the Yellow Jackets, he appeared in all 26 games as the "sixth man". He was fifth in scoring at 7.0 ppg., third with 4.2 rpg. and had 10 blocks, seven steals and four assists. Ameen scored his season-high 17 points at Heidelberg University in a 90-69 win on December 7, 2011.

In three seasons, Ameen has played in 73 games, including 41 starts, and is averaging 8.8 ppg. and 5.2 rpg. He has totaled 645 points, 381 rebounds, 22 assists, 32 steals and 37 blocks.

Ameen also has displayed his academic excellence as a psychology major who maintains a 3.59 grade point average. He also is a Jacket Scholar.
