HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis won its first match of the season as it defeated Olivet (Mich.) College, 5-4, on the second day of its annual spring break trip.
The Yellow Jackets (1-7) and the Comets (2-7) each won three singles matches to start the match but BW took two of three doubles matches to secure its first win of the season.
In singles play, junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC player Kelsey Blatt (Tallmadge) defeated Maddy Drikakis in straight sets 6-3 and 6-1. Sophomore Claire Watts (Medina/Highland) posted a 6-4 and 6-2 win at number two singles against Blake Day. Junior Mackenzie Donalson (Hilliard/Davidson) gave the Yellow Jackets a 3-0 lead when she recorded a victory at number three singles against Powers with identical scores of 6-1. The Comets won number four, five and six singles to even the match at 3-3.
In doubles action, number one team of Blatt and Donalson regained the advantage for BW as they defeated Drikakis and Day by a count of 9-8 and 7-4 in the tie-breaker. The second duo of Watts and junior Mackenzie Baker (Vermilion/Elyria Catholic) secured the win for the Yellow Jackets as they posted an 8-5 victory against Haley Powers and BreAnne Rudlaff. Olivet won the final doubles match.
BW closes out its spring break trip with a pair of matches on Wednesday, March 11 against Carroll (Wis.) University and Catholic (D.C.) University. The match against Carroll is slated for 11:30 a.m. and the match with Catholic is set to start at 6 p.m.
