BW Women’s Tennis Beats Heidelberg, 7-2, for Third Straight Victory

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis team won its third straight match as it defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Heidelberg University, 7-2, in an OAC match at the "Pop" Collins Courts.  The match ewas much closer than the final score indicates.

BW (4-9, 3-0 OAC) won two of three doubles matches versus Heidelberg (3-6, 0-2 OAC) and led, 2-1. The No.3 tandem of freshmen Shannon Finkenthal (Beachwood) and Kayla Eeg (Waterford, Pa./ Edinboro General McLane) won, 8-6, in their first action this season as a combination for a 1-0 lead. The number-one duo of junior Kelsey Blatt (Tallmadge) and junior Mackenzie Donalson (Hilliard/ Davidson) gave BW a 2-0 lead when they also won, 8-6, to improve to 7-9 this season and 2-1 against OAC opponents. Heidelberg won the No.2 doubles match to cut BW's lead in half.

In singles play, BW won five of six matches, including two of three via the tie-breaker, to clinch the victory. Junior No.5 Academic All-OAC player Hayley Peterson (Tulsa, Okla.) won, 6-0 and 6-2 to improve to 2-14 this season and give BW a 3-1 lead. Donalson extended the lead to 4-1 when she won at No.3 singles by the scores of 6-1 and 6-2 to improve to a team-best 9-6 this season. BW clinched its third straight victory when Finkenthal won at No.4 by the scores of 6-4 and 6-0 to improve to 5-10 this season and a perfect 3-0 versus OAC opponents.

Watts, this week's OAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week, made it 6-1 with a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9 in the tie-breaker) win to improve to 6-10 this season and 3-0 versus OAC foes this season. HU won at No.1 singles by the scores of 7-6 (7-4 in the tie-breaker), 1-6 and 1-0 (10-7 in the tie-breaker) to make it 6-2. Eeg won at No.6 to close out the match and win when she won 6-1, 6-7 and 1-0 (11-9 in the tie-breaker) to improve to 3-4 this season and 2-1 versus OAC opponents.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Friday, April 3 when BW hosts an OAC match versus Otterbein University on the "Pop" Collins Courts at 1 p.m.
