BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis team dropped a pair of non-conference matches in the final matches before its southern trip.
BW (0-5) opened the day by traveling to nearby Oberlin and was defeated by No. 32 nationally-ranked Oberlin College, 9-0, in the Heisman Field House. The Yellow Jackets ended the day with a 5-4 loss to Alma (Mich.) College at the North Ridge Racquet Club in North Ridgeville.
Against the Yeowomen, the number one doubles team of junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC player Kelsey Blatt (Tallmadge) and junior Mackenzie Donalson (Hilliard / Davidson) came up short in a thrilling 9-7 match. Also, freshman number five singles player Shannon Finkenthal (Beachwood) dropped a tough match 6-1 and 7-5.
Against the Scots, the number two doubles team of junior Mackenzi Baker (Vermilion/Elyria Catholic) and sophomore Claire Watts (Medina/Highland) and the number three tandem of Hayley Paterson and Finkenthal each won by an 8-4 decision. Donalson won her third singles match by scores of 6-4 and 6-1. Finkenthal won her fifth singles match by scores of 1-6, 7-5 and 10-6
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on March 9 when they play Juniata (Pa.) College in the first match of their spring break trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina at 8 a.m. BW will play four other matches in Hilton Head. The next home match is scheduled for Saturday, March 21 at 1 p.m.
