AKRON, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's swimming and diving teams set five school records on the opening day of competition of the Ohio Athletic Conference Championships hosted by John Carroll University in the Ocasek Natatorium on the campus of the University of Akron.
The BW women set four records and were led by senior All-OAC performer Chandler Ashbaugh (Napoleon) as she won one event and set two individual records and was a member of a relay team record.
The BW women are currently fifth of seven teams with 103 points. Ohio Northern University leads after the first day with 188 points.
Ashbaugh was the champion in the 200-yard individual medley in a school-record time of 2:07.93, which was nine hundredths of a second from tying the OAC record. She had the fastest qualifying time in the prelims with a time of 2:09.36. Ashbaugh also set school-records in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke as a member of two relay teams. She set the 50-yard freestyle in the first leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 24.26 seconds and the 100-yard backstroke in the first leg of the 400-yard medley with a time of 58.87.
In addition to Ashbaugh for the BW women, sophomore freestyler Jordyn Miller (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) placed sixth in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:23.21. Miller tied a career-best time in the prelims in a time of 5:26.83. Freshman freestyler Claire Onchuck (Darrien, Ill./Hinsdale South) placed 14 in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 25.86. Sophomore freestyler Lena Kortis (Canton/Massillon Perry) placed 15th in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 26.03. Kortis swam a career-best in the prelims of 26.00 seconds. Sophomore freestyler Courtney Severns (Bucyrus) placed 16th in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 26.12. In the prelims Severns swam a career-best time of 26.04. Freshman freestyler Claire Onchuck (Darrien, Ill./Hinsdale South) placed 14 in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 25.86.
Freshman stroker Sarah Krupp (Williamsville, N.Y. / Williamsville South) placed 11th in the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:16.81. Krupp swam a career-best time in the prelims with a wall touch at the 2:15.68 mark.
In relay action, the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Ashbaugh, Onchuck, Severns, and Lena Kortis (Canton / Massillon Perry) finished fourth in a school-record time of 1:40.76.
BW is back in action on Friday, February 19 for the second day of competition. Preliminary events begin at 10 a.m. and the finals are slated for at 6 p.m. The final day of competition is on Saturday, February 29 with the prelims at 10 a.m. and the finals at 5:30 p.m.
