BEREA, Ohio – Sophomore attack Victoria Budzyn (East Aurora, N.Y.) recorded her second hat trick of the season and the Baldwin Wallace University women's lacrosse team defeated Walsh University, 9-4, in the program's first game at Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium.  The game was also the first for Walsh in school history.

The win improves the Yellow Jackets to 2-2.  Walsh starts its season 0-1.

In addition to Budzyn, who notched four goals in the program's first game against Hiram, junior midfielder Ellen Fedick (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) scored two goals.  Freshman attack Jackie Buchheister (Biglerville, Pa.) the Yellow Jackets' only assist.

Walsh was led by junior Ivy Meloy with two goals.  Sophomore Lauren Bricker had Walsh's only assist.

Meloy scored the first goal of the game at the 23:07 mark of the first half and added another tally less than three minutes later to give Walsh a 2-0 lead.

Freshman defender Liz Hiros (Cleveland/St. Joseph Academy) scored her first career goal and the team's first goal inside Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium at 17:45.  Fedick tied the game, 2-2, with her fourth score of the season two minutes later.

A goal from senior Mary Myers at 7:28 gave the Cavaliers a brief 3-2 lead, their last of the game.

Budzyn tied the game at 6:22 and sent BW into halftime tied, 3-3.

In the second half, Budzyn gave the Yellow Jackets the lead for good with her second goal of the game at the 27:49 mark.  Freshman midfielder Emily Tallmadge (Fairview, Pa.) extended the lead to 5-3 with a score of her own just nine seconds later.

The Yellow Jackets outscored Walsh, 4-1, the rest of the way, including goals by freshman defender Tia Esbenshade (Wooster), Fedick, and two more from Budzyn.

BW won 11 of 15 draw controls, held a 46-24 advantage in ground balls, and outshot Walsh by a 28-13 margin.

Junior Bridget Walsh (Elyria/Elyria Catholic) logged all 60 minutes in goal and made five saves for the Yellow Jackets.  Freshman Tia Tyler collected 10 saves in 60 minutes of action for Walsh.

Prior to the game, student-athletes from both teams formed a circle by joining hands at midfield while the stadium crowd observed a moment of silence in wake of last weekend's bus accident involving the Seton Hill (Pa.) University women's lacrosse team.

BW returns to action tomorrow when it hosts Olivet (Mich.) College at 1 p.m. in the first game of a women's and men's lacrosse doubleheader.  The Yellow Jacket men host Wilmington at 4 p.m.  Live stats and video for both games will be available at www.bwyellowjackets.com.
