Jackets Split Final Home OAC Doubleheader

BEREA, OHIO --  The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader today (Wednesday, April 25, 2012) with cross-town rival John Carroll University. John Carroll won the first game by a final score of 5-0 and the Yellow Jackets won the second game, 9-8.


With the split, B-W is now 18-18 overall and 6-8 in the OAC. The Blue Streaks are now 25-13 overall and 8-6 in the OAC.

In the first game, the Yellow Jacket offense produced no runs on four hits and was led by freshman shortstop Brittany Lightel (Tallmadge), junior rightfielder Alyssa Brown (Hudson) and sophomores Tabitha Murray (Mogadore/Field) and Ashley Elber (Huron/Edison) as all went 1-for-3,

On the mound, senior Sarah Baker (Mentor/Lake Catholic) suffered the loss in four innings of work as she allowed five runs (three earned) on seven hits.  She recorded one strikeout with no walks. Murray came in for three innings of relief and allowed no runs with two hits. She also recorded four strikeouts and walked one Blue Streak batter. 

In the second game, B-W opened the scoring when it plated four runs on four hits in the bottom of the first inning.  Sophomore third baseman Lauren Feciuch (Kent/Field) led off the inning with a homerun to left field.  Lightel doubled to left field and Murray was hit by a pitch. Lightel advanced to third and Murray to second on the sacrifice bunt by sophomore first baseman Kaity Mullen (Avon Lake). Alyssa Brown cleared the bases with her first homerun as a Yellow Jacket.

John Carroll would cut the lead down to one, 4-3, in the top of the second as it scored three runs on one hit.

The Yellow Jackets pushed their lead back up to two runs, 5-3, as they scored one run on one hit.  Sophomore catcher Sami Brown (Kent/Field) led off the inning with a walk and would advanced to second on the sacrifice bunt by sophomore pitcher Justina Wise (New London). Sami Brown advanced to third on the single to right field by Feciuch. Feciuch stole second base and Sami Brown scored on a throwing error by the catcher.

The Blue Streaks tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the third inning as they plated two runs on three hits in the top of the third inning.

B-W would regain the lead, 7-5, in the bottom half of the inning as it scored two runs on two hits.  Baker led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on the walk by senior second baseman Katie Finley (Vermilion)Baker and Finley each advanced a base on the sacrifice bunt by Sami BrownBaker and Finely scored on the RBI double down the left field line by Feciuch

John Carroll cut back into the lead, 7-6, when it scored one run on one hit in the top of the fourth inning.  

The Yellow Jackets scored their final runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning as they scored two runs on three hits.  Feciuch led off the inning with a single up the middle and advanced to second on the sacrifice bunt by LightelFeciuch scored on the RBI double to center field by MurrayMurray advanced to third on a ground out and scored on the RBI single through the right side by Alyssa Brown.

The Blue Streaks tried to make things interesting as they came as close as one run in the top of the seventh inning when they plated two runs on three hits.

The B-W offense scored nine runs on 10 hits and was led by Feciuch who went 4-for-4 with a homerun, double, stolen base and three RBI.  Lightel went 2-for-2 with a double and run scored.  Alyssa Brown went 2-for-3 with a homerun and four RBI.

On the mound, Wise got the no decision as she pitched two and one third innings and allowed five runs (three earned) on four hits with two strikeouts and no walks.  Murray picked up the win as she pitched the final four and two thirds innings for her seventh victory of the season.   She allowed three runs on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

B-W is back in action on Thursday, April 19 when it plays host to NCAA Division II Ursuline College in a non-conference twinbill at 3:30 p.m. The Yellow Jackets also travel to Ada, Ohio this Saturday, April 21 for an OAC doubleheader versus first place Ohio Northern University at 1:00 p.m.
