Jackets Sweep Muskingum in OAC Doubleheader

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team swept an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader with Muskingum University today (Saturday, March 31, 2012) at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field by final scores of 6-4 in seven innings and 8-0 in five innings.  This marked the first home OAC doubleheader as well as the conclusion of six-game homestand.

With the wins, the Yellow Jackets improved to 13-9 overall and 2-2 in the OAC while the Fighting Muskies fell to 10-12 overall and 1-3 in the OAC.


In game one, Muskingum jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning before B-W would tie the game at 2-2 on two hits.  Freshman shortstop Brittany Lightel (Tallmadge) would lead off the inning with a walk and was forced out at second on the fielder's choice by freshman leftfielder Mackenzie Brua (Avon).  Brua would advance to third on a double to left center from sophomore designated player Tabitha Murray (Mogadore/Field).  Sophomore Kaity Mullen (Avon Lake) would then walk to load the bases before Brua would score and Murray and Mullenwould each move up a base on the an illegal pitch by the Fighting Muskies pitcher. Sophomore Lauren Feciuch (Kent/Field) would score Murray on the RBI single.

The Yellow Jackets would score a run in the next four innings before Muskingum would smack a two-run two-out home run in the top of the seventh to close out the scoring at 6-4.

 

The B-W offense scored its six runs on 10 hits and was led by Murray who went  3-for-4 with a double and RBI.   
Feciuch and sophomore centerfielder Nikki Peskura (Strongsville) each went 2-for-3.   Feciuch had and RBI while Peskura had her first career multiple hit game and had her first career double and two runs scored.
 

On the mound, senior pitcher
 Sarah Baker (Mentor/Lake Catholic) went the distance for her 48th career complete game.  She pitched seven innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks.  She improved to 6-1 on the season and now has a career mark of 43-24.

In game two, the Yellow Jackets would score eight runs in the first three innings to record their seventh shutout win of the season.
 

B-W would take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  With two outs,
 Murray doubled to right center  and Mullen singled to left field to score Murray.  
 

In the second, the Yellow Jackets scored three runs on three hits to take a 4-0 lead.  Senior second baseman
 Katie Finley (Vermilion) led off the inning with a double to left center would advance to third on the sacrifice bunt from Peskura.  Finley would score on the fielder's choice from sophomore pitcher Justina Wise (New London). Lightel would reach on a infield single andWise advanced to second.  Baker then smacked a double to right center to score Wise and advance Lightel to third.  Lightel would score on the RBI ground out by Murray.
 

B-W would close out the scoring in the bottom of the third inning when it scored four runs on four hits.  
Feciuch led off the inning with a double to left center . Junior right fielder Alyssa Brown (Hudson) would walk and advanced to second on the walk by Peskura, which also advancedFeciuch to third.   Feciuch would then score on the RBI single by Wise that also advancedBrown to third and Peskura to second.  Lightel would reach first base on a fielding error by the pitcher that score Brown and advanced Peskura to third and Wise to second.  Baker singled through the left side to score Peskura and advance Wise to third and Lightel to second. Murraythen singled up the middle to score Wise with the game's final run.
 

Baker, Feciuch and Murray all went 2-for-3 with a double each led the Yellow Jackets.  Bakerand Murray also had two RBI.   Wise went 1- for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored.
 

On the mound,
 Wise pitched four shut out innings to pick up her third victory of the season.  She struck out three and did not allow a walk.   Murray came in and pitched a scoreless fifth inning with two strikeouts.

B-W will next travel to Alliance for an OAC doubleheader against the Purple Raider of Mount Union on Friday, April 6 at the 23rd Street Softball Field.  The doubleheader is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. The next home doubleheader is on Saturday, April 14 when the team will welcome the Quakers of Wilmington College to the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field for an OAC doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
