BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis team swept a pair of non-conference matches in its final tune-up before its annual southern trip.
BW (4-0) opened the day with a 9-0 shutout of Penn State Behrend in a rescheduled non-conference match from February 14 in the Lou Higgins Center Fieldhouse. The Yellow Jackets closed out the sweep when recorded a 9-0 shutout Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) College, 9-0, at the North Ridge Racquet Club in North Ridgeville.
In doubles action the number one team of All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC player Peter Harris (Akron/Revere) and All-OAC player Doug Ganim (Westerville /Olantangy Orange) posted a pair of 8-0 victories. The number two tandem of sophomore Nathan Katz (Upper Arlington/Bexley) and sophomore Jake Leibler (Medina) recorded two 8-1 wins and the number three team of junior Kevin Fredrick (Archbold) and sophomore Brian Carano (Akron/Revere) tallied a pair of 8-0 victories.
In singles action, Katz, Leibler, Fredrick and Carano each won a pair of matches. Katz won at number one singles against Penn State Behrend, 6-2 and 6-0, and defeated his Washington & Jefferson opponent at third singles, 6-3 and 6-1. Leibler earned a second singles victory against the Lions, 6-1 and 6-2 and a fourth singles win against the Presidents, 6-3 and 6-2. Fredrick picked up a third singles win against Behrend, 6-2 and 6-2 and a fifth singles victory against W&J, 6-0 and 6-3. Carano won a fourth singles match against the Lions and a sixth singles match against the Presidents, 6-0 and 6-2.
In addition, Harris, Ganim, sophomore Brandon Caynor (Norton) and freshman Alex Papke (Federal Way, Wash. /Thomas Jefferson) each won a singles match. Caynor won his fifth singles match against Behrend, 6-3 and 6-0. Papke recorded his first career singles victory as he won his sixth singles match against the Lions, 6-4 and 6-1. Harris and Ganim each won by scores of 6-0 and 6-0 and 6-0 and 6-1, respectively against Washington and Jefferson after sitting out the match against Penn State Behrend.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Sunday, March 8 when they play Nazareth (N.Y.) College in the first match of their spring break trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina at 8:30 a.m. BW will play three other matches in Hilton Head. The next home match is scheduled for Tuesday, April 7 when the hosts cross-town rival John Carroll University on the Pop Collins Tennis Courts at 3:30 p.m.
