UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – A late second-half goal could not propel the Baldwin Wallace University men's soccer team as the Yellow Jackets allowed the golden goal in a 3-2 overtime loss to Ohio Athletic Conference and crosstown rival John Carroll University inside Don Shula Stadium.

After weathering a barrage of Blue Streak (9-4-1, 5-1 OAC) shots to start the game, BW (7-7-2, 2-3-1 OAC) made its first scoring opportunity count. In the 17th minute, the reigning OAC Forward of the Year, junior two-time All-OAC and Academic All-OAC forward Danny Ruple (Berea/Berea-Midpark), beat a defender and one-touched the ball into the right corner of the net to give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead. BW held onto the one-goal advantage until late in the first half when John Carroll netted a header goal in the 42nd minute, evening things up at 1-1 heading into halftime.

Looking for the go-ahead goal early in the second half, the Blue Streaks scored in the 54th minute and maintained the 2-1 lead for the better part of 28 minutes despite some added pressure by the Yellow Jacket offense. BW managed to double its shot count in the second half and got good looks at an equalizing goal from Ruple in the 67th minute and sophomore midfielder Bryce Posner (Aurora) in the 73rd minute.

Meanwhile, junior goalkeeper Patrick Mehal (Richfield/Revere) kept John Carroll off the scoreboard any further with four second half saves. Ruple finally broke through in the 82nd minute with his second unassisted goal of the game to send the Yellow Jackets and the Blue Streaks into overtime. However, John Carroll got the first and only look at the golden goal in the 92nd minute to seal the 3-2 victory.

Mehal made a total of six saves in the game off the Blue Streaks' nine shots on goal. John Carroll held the offensive advantage over BW in shots (25-12), shots on goal (9-5) and corner kicks (8-2).

BW will return home on Saturday, Oct. 20, to host Wilmington College in OAC action at 7 p.m. inside George Finnie Stadium.
