BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's lacrosse team defeated Otterbein University by a score of 12-5 in an Ohio Athletic Conference game on Seniors' and Parents' Night on Tressel Field inside George Finnie Stadium.
BW (11-2, 6-1 OAC) was led by sophomore attack Mike Nanosky (Medina) and freshman attack Griffin Dunkle (Amherst, N.Y./Central) as they combined for seven of the Yellow Jackets 12 goals. Nanosky scored a career-high tying four goals and added an assist for a game and career-high five points. Dunkle recorded his first career hat trick with three goals for three points. Defensively, senior defensive midfielder Jarrod Gilliam (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) caused two turnovers and collected two ground balls and junior All-OAC goalkeeper Mike Dizonno (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) made six saves and improved to 9-1 on the season.
Otterbein (7-8, 4-2 OAC) was led by sophomore midfielder Joe Sanfillipo as he scored a goal and added two assists for a team-high three points. Junior midfielder Anthony Spingola and junior attack Connor Dziewit each added two goals for the Cardinals.
BW outscored Otterbein 5-0 in the first quarter. The offensive strong quarter offensively was spearheaded by Nanosky as he scored three of his four goals in the first stanza. Dunkle netted his first goal of the game in the first and junior All-OAC attack Brock Riemenschneider (Rocky River) scored the final goal of the quarter off feed from junior midfielder Matt McDowell (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) with 30 seconds on the clock.
The Yellow Jackets went on a 4-1 run to open the second quarter and extended its lead 8-1 when McDowell scored an unassisted goal at the 9:10 mark. In the final eight minutes of play the Cardinals outscored BW 3-1 which was capped off by a man-up goal from Dziewit off a feed from Sanfillipo to cut the Yellow Jackets lead to 9-4 at halftime.
In a strong defensive third quarter, BW and Otterbein each only took five shots apiece but the Yellow Jackets scored the only goal when Nanosky assisted sophomore midfielder Derek Andrews (Alden, N.Y./ Iroquois) at the 4:08 mark to give BW a 10-4 lead heading into the fourth.
BW scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter and took its largest leat at 12-4 when Dunkle completed the hat trick at the 10:30 mark off a pass from freshman midfielder Ben Kubiak (Wooster). The Cardinals closed out the scoring when freshman midfielder Justin McKee assisted Spingola at the 1:43 mark.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, April 26 when they travel to Alliance for their Ohio Athletic Conference regular season finale against the University of Mount Union at 7:30 p.m.
