ADA, Ohio – Junior midfielder Matt McDowell (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) scored a career and game-high four goals to lead the Baldwin Wallace University men's lacrosse team to a 14-5 Ohio Athletic Conference victory against Ohio Northern University inside Dial-Roberson Stadium.
BW (9-2, 4-1 OAC) also received offensive production from sophomore All-OAC midfielder Chad Steinwachs (Buffalo, N.Y./Williamsville North) as he scored two goals and added one assist for three points and junior attack Alex Binner (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) as he netted a season-high two goals. Defensively, senior and OAC Defender of the Year Josiah Greve (Milford) caused three turnovers, collected five ground balls and scored his first goal since his freshman year. Junior All-OAC goalkeeper Mike Dizonno (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) picked up his eight win of the season and made nine saves.
Ohio Northern (9-4, 4-1 OAC) was led by sophomore midfielder Drew Eramo and sophomore attack Max Weese as they each tallied three points each. Eramo scored a team-high two goals and added an assist and Weese scored one goal and added two assists.
The Yellow Jackets outshot the Polar Bears 7-2 and scored the only goal of the first quarter when freshman attack Riley Mahon (Palatine, Ill./William Fremd) netted his fifth career goal at the 6:54 mark.
BW scored the first two goals in the second quarter and extended its lead to 3-0 when McDowell scored off a pass from junior attack Brock Riemenschneider (Rocky River) at the 11:51 mark. Ohio Northern went on a 3-0 run to tie the game when Eramo netted his eighth goal of the year off a feed from Weese at the 6:17 mark. In the final six minutes of the half, the Yellow Jackets outscored the Polar Beats 3-0 with the last goal coming when McDowell as he completed the hat trick with 27 seconds on the clock to give BW a 6-3 at the break.
In the third quarter, Ohio Northern freshman attack Cameron Marous opened the second half as he scored off a pass from Eramo at the 9:39 mark to cut the Yellow Jackets lead to 6-4. BW scored five unanswered goals to go up 11-4 when McDowell netted his fourth of the game with 1:32 on the clock. Both teams scored a goal in the final minute to make the score 12-5 heading in to the final 15 minutes of play.
In the fourth, each team got off six shots. The Yellow Jackets scored the only two goals of the quarter in the final two minutes of play with the last coming when junior midfielder Alex Juhasz (Lancaster, N.Y./Central) connected with Riemenschneider who scored his first of the game with 16 seconds left.
BW is back in action when it travels to Tiffin to make up the postponed OAC game against Heidelberg University inside Hoernemann Stadium at 7 p.m.
