BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace men's lacrosse team defeated Capital University by a score of 10-4 in an Ohio Athletic Conference game on Tressel Field inside George Finnie Stadium.
BW (8-1, 3-0 OAC) was led by junior midfielder Derek Andrews (Alden, N.Y./Iroquois) as he scored a game and career-high tying three goals. In addition, junior midfielder Jack Gerlack (Rocky River), sophomore attack Mike Nanosky (Medina) and sophomore All-OAC attack Chad Steinwachs (Buffalo, N.Y./Williamsville North) each netted two goals each. Defensively, junior All-OAC goalkeeper Mike Dizonno (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Stevenson) made a season-high 10 saves and sophomore All-OAC defender Brian Jandzinski (Lancaster, N.Y./Central) caused two turnovers and collected a team-high tying four ground balls.
Capital (4-5, 1-2 OAC) was led by junior goalkeeper Cole Palmby as he faced 29 shots and made a game-high 19 saves. Offensively sophomore attack Ryan Rampi scored a goal and added an assist for a team-high two points.
The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring when Andrews came from behind the net a score an unassisted goal at the 10:24 mark. BW extended its lead to 2-0 before the end of the quarter when Nanosky took a pass from junior midfielder Matt McDowell (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) and buried it from 15 yards out with 5:47 left in the quarter.
In the second quarter the Crusaders got on the board when Rampi made a shot from long range off a feed from sophomore midfielder Barrett Naugle at the 10:47 mark. The Yellow Jackets went on a 3-0 run to close out the scoring in the half with the last goal coming when Steinwachs beat the Capital goalkeeper with 3:37 left in the quarter to give BW a 5-1 lead at the intermission.
The Crusaders opened the scoring after the break as junior attack Brennan O'Callaghan netted an unassisted goal at the 13:24 mark to cut the BW lead to 5-2. The Yellow Jackets scored three unanswered goals capped off when Gerlack scored his first to extend their lead to 8-2 at the 3:12 mark. Capital scored the final two goals of the quarter with the last coming when freshman attack C.J. Hughes beat the BW goalkeeper with 52 seconds left in the quarter to cut the lead back to 8-4.
The Yellow Jackets scored the only two goals in the final 15 minutes of play. Gerlack scored his second of the game at the 10:37 mark and Nanosky closed out the scoring off a feed from junior Brock Riemenschneider (Rocky River) with 3:51 left on the clock.
