Men’s Basketball Starts Road Game Stretch Victorious

NEW CONCORD, Ohio—The Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets men's basketball team traveled to Muskingum University and fought back to escape with a 72-65 victory in an Ohio Athletic Conference game.

BW (13-8, 8-6 OAC) was led by sophomore All-OAC guard Drew Wennes (Huron) with 20 points and added 4 rebounds. Junior All-OAC guard Anthony Mazzeo (North Canton/Massillon Jackson) also contributed 19 points and 5 rebounds.

Muskingum (5-18, 2-14 OAC) was led by senior guard Alex Masinelli with 21 points and 4 rebounds. Freshman forward Zachary Chatmon added 16 points and 7 rebounds.

1st Half

  • Junior guard Jake Snyder (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) kicked off the scoring action with a long range three
  • Wennes three-point shot extended the Yellow Jacket lead to 12-4
  • The Fighting Muskies fought back and trailed BW by 1 until Mazzeo made both free throw attempts to pull ahead to 15-12
  • Muskingum kept up the pace to tie up the game at 25 with 6:16 left in the half
  • A long range Mazzeo three put the Yellow Jackets up by 28-25
  • The teams traded off with scores, but the Fighting Muskies pulled ahead to enter the half with a 40-34

2nd Half

  • Wennes scored the first points of the half with a layup that was assisted by Snyder
  • A Masinelli fast break layup extended the Muskingum lead to 52-41
  • BW fought back with a 10-0 run and another Wennes three pointer brought the Yellow Jackets within 1 point
  • Both teams traded scores until a junior forward Jackson Simmons (Wadsworth) layup helped the Yellow Jackets regain the lead at 56-55
  • Snyder added another long range three  to extend the BW lead to 62-59
  • The Yellow Jackets added a few more shots to pull ahead, even with the Fighting Muskies on their heels. It was too late as BW finished with the victory.

The Yellow Jackets return to play on Wednesday February 16 as they travel to University Heights, Ohio to face OAC crosstown rival John Carroll University at 7 p.m. in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.
