Mazzeo’s Career High Propels Men’s Basketball Past Hiram in Season Opener

HIRAM, Ohio – Junior guard Anthony Mazzeo's (North Canton/Massillon Jackson) career high 45 points propels the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team to a season opening 91-65 victory over Hiram College in a nonconference game inside the Price Gymnasium.

BW (1-0) had two players in double figures. Mazzeo finished with 45 points, six rebounds, two assists and three steals. He also tied the school record with nine threes made and 13 threes attempted. Sophomore guard Drew Wennes (Huron) added 10 points and five rebounds. 

Hiram (0-1) was lead by junior forward Kevin Beans Jr. who had 12 points, four rebounds and three assists. Also in double figures was junior forward Virgil Crawford who finished with 12 points and four boards. 

The Yellow Jackets started off the half hot; opening the game on a 10-3 run behind nine points from Mazzeo. BW continued to hold the lead the entire half. The Terriers clawed back to get it to 17-17. The Yellow Jackets regained a 10 point lead with 4:54 remaining in the half to make it 33-23. The next three minutes featured back and forth action as BW remained in control. Over a two minute span right before half, Wennes had the hot hand getting nine straight points to give the Yellow Jackets a 47-34 lead into the half.

BW did not back down in the second half. Hiram was able to cut in the lead early, after the Yellow Jackets got into early foul trouble. The Terriers were able to trim the BW lead down to eight midway through the second half.  The rest of the half was controlled by the Yellow Jackets who got a late 12-0 run to put the game away. Each team added one more basket and the game ended with a BW 91-65 victory.

The Yellow Jackets return to action on Monday, November 15 when they travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. to take on La Roche University in a nonconference game on the Coach Scott Lang Court at 7:00 p.m.
