BEREA, Ohio – Senior quarterback Tyler Moeglin (Canton/ Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas) accounted for 308 yards and two touchdowns as the Baldwin Wallace University (4-2, 4-1 OAC) football team won its third straight game as it defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Wilmington (1-5, 1-4 OAC) by a 21-14 count on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium in the 38th Annual Lee Tressel Shrine Classic before a crowd of 1,777. With its win, BW leads 14-3 in the all-time series that dates back to 1922 and has won seven straight games against the Quakers.
The game was tied 0-0 after one quarter and 7-7 at halftime and BW led 21-7 after three periods. The Yellow Jackets had a 500-2t61 advantage in total yards, including a 238-62 advantage on the ground. In addition, the BW defense held Wilmington to just 82 yards of offense in the second half. The past two weeks, the BW defense has allowed just 105 yards and seven points.
For BW, Moeglin completed 21 of 27 passes for 216 yards and one TD. He also ran for a team-high 92 yards in 17 attempts and a TD and caught two passes for 46 yards. Senior running back Issac Reed III (Lehigh Acres, Fla./ Lehigh) and sophomore RB Austin Smith (Broadview Heights/ North Royalton) each had 69 rushing yards and Reed had a TD. The top receiver was sophomore Trevor George (Aliquippa, Pa./ Carlyton) with a career-high seven catches for 70 yards. The Yellow Jacket defense was led by senior middle linebacker Tyler Burdorff (Painrsville/ Riverside) had a team-high eight tackles.
Wilmington used a pair of QB's. Sophomore Luke Credit started and completed five of six passes for 50 yards before leaving with an injury. Starting sophomore wide receiver/ QB Brandon Mitchell completed 8 of 22 pases for 149 yards and two TD's. Junior RB Chase Manica topped the running game with 37 yards in 11 attempts. Sophomore WR Aroyal Wright, who was the Wilmington Shrine Player of the Game, had five grabs for a game-high 111 yards and a TD, and senior Justin Lee had five for 72 with a TD. The Quaker were led on defense by senior defensive back Tarrell Starckey with a game-high 16 tackles.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Quakers scored on the first play of the second quarter to lead 7-0 when Mitchell threw a 58-yard touchdown pass to Wright and freshman placekicker Grant Brown added the PAT to complete a 5-play and 69-yard drive.
BW tied the game 7-7 thirty seconds prior to halftime when Moeglin, who was the BW Shrine Player of the Game for the second straight year, threw a 10-yard TD pass to senior tight end Dylan Minick (Twinsburg). Junior Academic All-OAC kicker Joe Simonis (Hinckley/ Twinsburg) added the PAT boot to complete a 6-play and 39-yard drive.
In the third quarter, BW took a 14-7 lead at 11:28 and its first possession when Reed ran two yards to the endzone to complete an 8-play and 60-yard drive. Simonis added the PAT.
The lead grew to 21-7 with 1:07 left in the third when Moeglin took a quarterback keeper 32 yards to the endzone to complete a quick, three-play and 41-yard possession. Simonis tacked on his third PAT.
In the fourth quarter, the Quakers closed the gap to 21-14 with 4:57 left when Mitchell lofted a 54-yard TD aerial to Lee to end a quick, 2-play and 60-yard possession. Brown connected on his second PAT boot.
Following a third BW lost fumble, Wilmington had one more chance to tie or win, but the BW defense forced a four-and-out by the Quakers. Then the offense ran out the clock to preserve its third straight triumph.
The Yellow Jackets return to action next Saturday, October 24 when BW travels to Westerville to play OAC rival Otterbein University on Sparky Ballenger Field in Memorial Stadium at 1:30 p.m.
