No. 8 BW Wrestling Places Fifth at NWCA National Duals

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The two-time defending Ohio Athletic Conference champion and eighth-nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University wrestling team placed fifth at the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) National Duals inside the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. 

BW (15-2), who was fifth of 24 teams, opened the duals with a 17-15 victory over No. 15 nationally ranked University Wisconsin at La Crosse.  The Yellow Jackets fell to second-nationally ranked Johnson and Wales (R.I.) University by a final score of 20-13.  BW defeated No. 21-nationally ranked Centenary (N.J.) University by a final score of 30-15.  The Yellow Jackets knocked off Olivet (Mich.) College by a final score of 35-9.  BW closed out the duals with a 22-17 victory over No. 11-nationally ranked Coe (Iowa) College. 

Against La Crosse, sophomore 133-pounder Dante Ginnetti (Poland/Seminary) earned a 9-3 decision victory.  Freshman 149-pounder Stanley Bleich (North Ridgeville/Elyria Catholic) posted an 7-5 overtime decision win.  Junior All-American and All-Ohio Athletic Conference 165-pounder Anthony Arroyo (Maumee), who is ranked third nationally, picked up an 18-7 technical fall victory.  Junior 174-pounder Justin Ransom (Madison) won by an 11-7 decision.  Senior 285-pounder Gabe Mahaney (Green) closed out the match and secured the victory with a 1-0 decision.

In the match with Johnson & Wales, senior All-OAC 125-pounder Chris Doyle (Akron/Green), who is sixth nationally ranked, earned a 4-1 decision against the fifth nationally ranked wrestler.   Arroyo picked up a 6-5 decision victory at 165-pounds.  Senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC 197-pounder Tyler Maclellan (Medina/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) won by an 8-0 major decision.  Mahaney won by a 4-2 decision at 285 pounds. 

Against Centenary, Doyle won a 5-2 decision at 125 pounds.  Ginnetti earned the pinfall at 133-pounds in 3:51. Bleich picked up a 3-2 decision victory against the fifth nationally ranked wrestler at 149-pounds.  Junior All-OAC 157-pounder Benjamin Hoof (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) won by forfeit.   Arroyo won his match by medical forfeit after leading by a score of 6-0 at 165 pounds.  Junior All-OAC 184-pounder Zeckary Lehman (Akron/Revere) pinned his opponent in 4:23. 

In the match with Olivet, Doyle started things off with a 7-6 decision victory at 125 pounds.  Sophomore 133-pounder Charlie Nash (Norwalk) won by pinfall in 1:20. Sophomore 141-pounder Aaron Kelly (Rocky River) claimed a 10-6 decision victory.  Hoof earned the 16-2 major decision victory at 157 pounds.  Arroyo won by pinfall against the fifth ranked wrestler at 165 pounds in 1:17. Ransom claimed a 12-0 major decision victory at 174-pounds.  Maclellan earned an 18-3 technical fall win at 197-pounds. 

Against Coe, Doyle opened up the match with a pin at 125 pounds in 1:49.  Bleich earned a 10-4 decision victory at 149 pounds.  Arroyo picked up a 12-3 major decision win at 165-pounds. Maclellan brought the match to just one point as he earned the 7-1 decision at 197 pounds.  Mahaney gave the Yellow Jackets the victory as he won by pinfall at 285-pounds in 4:07. 

BW is back in action on Saturday, January 13 when it travels to North Manchester, Indiana to compete in the annual Spartan Mat Classic hosted by Manchester University inside the Stauffer-Wolfe Arena at 10:00 a.m.
