BW Men’s Tennis Team Wins Tripleheader

MASON, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis team won a tripleheader by-shutout, including two Ohio Athletic Conference maches, at the world-renown Linder Family Tennis Center.  The Yellow Jackets are playing four matches in two days and play Heidelberg UNiversity tomorrow.

BW (12-1, 3-0 OAC) shut out Waynesburg (Pa.) University in a non-conference match, 9-0, this morning, then blanked OAC-rival Marietta College, 9-0, in an OAC match this afternoon, and whitewashed conference rival Muskingum University, 9-0, this evening.

In its match versus Waynesburg (5-5), BW won all three doubles and all six singles matches. 

In doubles play, the No.1 duo of junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC student-athletes Peter Harris (Akron/ Richfield Revere) and Doug Ganim (Westerville/ Olentangy Orange) won, 8-0. The No.2 tandem of sophomores Nathan Katz (Upper Arlington/ Bexley) and Jake Liebler (Medina) won, 8-1. The No.3 pairing of sophomore Brandon Caynor (Norton) and freshman Alex Papke (Federal Way, Wash./ Thomas Jefferson) won, 8-3.

In singles play, Liebler won at No.1 by the scores of 6-4 and 6-3. Junior Kevin Fredrick (Archbold) won at No.1 by a 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 score. Sophomore Brian Carano (Akron/ Richfield Revere) won at No.3 by scores of 6-1 and 6-2. Caynor won at No.4 by a 6-3 and 6-0 score. At No.4, Papke won, 6-3, 0-6 and 6-3. At No.6, sophomore Gavin Bushong (Marysville) won, 1-6, 6-1 and 6-4.

In its match versus Marietta (1-7, 0-3 OAC OAC), BW won all three doubles and all six singles matches.  

In doubles, Harris and Ganim won at No.1 by an 8-1 score. Katz and Liebler won at No.2 by an 8-0 shutout. Fredrick and Carano won at No.3 by default. 

In singles, Harris won at No.1 by a 6-1 and 6-0 score. Ganim won at No.2 by a 6-0 and 6-0 count. Katz won at No.3 by a 6-0 and 6-0 score. Liebler won at No.4 by a 6-0 and 6-0 shutout. Fredrick at No.5 and Carano at No.6 each won by default.

In its match versus Muskingum, BW again won all three singles and all six doubles matches.

In its match versus Muskingum (0-7, 0-4 OAC), BW won all three doubles and all six singles matches for the third straight match.  In doubles play, Harris and Ganim won 8-0 at No.1 to improve to 15-3 this season and 58-17 as a combination to rank in a tie for 17th all-time in school history. The No.2 duo of Katz and Liebler won by an 8-2 score to improve to 10-5 this season. The No.3 pairing of Fredrick and Carano won 8-0 and improved to 13-3 this seasn. In singles action, Harris won at No.1 by a 6-0 and 6-0 score to improve to 14-4 this season and 58-13 in his career to tie Jim Kucera (2005-2009) for 16th on the all-time win list. Ganim won at No.2 by a 6-0 and 6-0 count to improve to 13-3 this season and 55-13 in his career to rank tied for 22nd all-time. At No.3, Katz won 6-0 and 6-0 to improve to 10-7 this season. At No.4, Liebler won 6-0 and 6-0 to improve to 13-6 this season. At No.5, Fredrick won 6-1 and 6-0 to improve to 12-3 this season. Carano won at No.6 by the scores of 6-0 and 6-0 and improved to 12-2 this season.

Following its match Heidelberg, the Yellow Jackets return to action on Monday, April 13 when BW hosts a non-conference match versus Grove City (Pa.) College at the "Pop" Collins Tennis Complex at 3:30 p.m. Please also join us on Monday as the match versus GCC is a double-dual and the BW men (10-1 overall) will play Grove City at the same time The teams will alternate courts. In addition, the men and women will serve hotdogs and water to all fans in attendance.
