Men's Soccer Team Shuts Out Muskingum, 4-0, in Berea; Plays Capital in OAC Tourney

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's soccer team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Muskingum University, 4-0, tonight (Saturday, October 30, 2010) in the nightcap of a women's and men's Seniors' and Parents' Day doubleheader in The George Finnie Stadium in Berea.  In the opener, the Yellow Jacket women defeated the Fighting Muskie women, 5-0.

With its win, B-W improved to 11-5-4 overall and 4-3-2 in the OAC and opens play in next week's Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament on Tuesday, November 2 against Capital University in Columbus at 2:00 p.m.  B-W's shutout of the Fighting Muskies marked the second straight season that it whitewashed the Fighting Muskies in front of a regional cable television audience on SportsTime Ohio. Last year, B-W beat the Muskies, 4-0. With its loss, Muskingum fell to 8-8-3 overall and 2-5-2 in the OAC and ends its season.

In the first half, neither team scored and the game was deadlocked at 0-0 at the intermission.   

In the second half, BW finally broke the deadlock in the 64th minute when the ball deflected off the goalie and sophomore midfielder 
Pat Brennan (Akron/ Walsh Jesuit) hammered the rebound home for a 1-0 lead.  The goal was Brennan's six this season.

The Yellow Jackets put the game away at the 75:15 mark when All-OAC forward 
Carlin Vandendriessche (Medina/ Senior) put the ball in the goal in the far post from the 18 via an assist from junior midfielder AndyThompson (Huron). Vandendriessche's goal was his eighth this season. Then senior midfielder Jeff Bonezzi (Medina/ Senior) scored his third goal of the season at the 86:44 mark and classmate Tyler Leister (Stow/ Stow-Munroe Falls) scored the final goal of the night with 37 seconds left via an assist from BonezziLeister's goal moved him into second place in school history with 32 career goals.

Overall, B-W outshot the Fighting Muskies, 24-10, and also outcornered Muskingum, 5-3.

In goal, sophomore goalie 
Ryan Hulings (Centerville) faced 10 Muskie shots and made 6 saves.  The shutout was Hulings' sixth this season.

The first round of the 2010 OAC Men's Soccer Tournament begins on Tuesday, November 2, the semifinals are on Thursday, Nov. 4 and the Championship Match is on Saturday, November 6.  All games are played at the site of the highest seeded team.   To learn all of the pairings, sites and game times in the first round, please visit the OAC Web site on Sunday, Oct. 31 at www.oac.org


Today's doubleheader between B-W and OAC rival Muskingum University was taped and will be shown on a delay basis by regional cable network SportsTime Ohio (www.sportstimeohio.com). The women's game will be shown on October 30 at
 9:00 p.m. and again on Monday, November 1 at 5:00 a.m.  The men's game will be aired on Sunday, Oct. 31 at 3:30 p.m. and on Monday, Nov. 1 at 7:00 a.m. and 12:00noon.
