Men's Soccer Team Defeats John Carroll, 2-1, in Berea

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's soccer team defeated Cleveland cross-town and Ohio Athletic Conference rival John Carroll University, 2-1, tonight (Wednesday, October 27, 2010) at the George Finnie Stadium in Berea.

With its win, B-W must win or tie this Saturday versus Muskingum to secure a spot in the 2010 OAC Men's Soccer Tournament. The Jackets improved their record to 10-5-2 overall and 3-3-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. With the loss, John Carroll falls to 10-8 overall and 4-4 in the OAC.

In the first half, John Carroll opened the scoring at the 21:24 mark when Andrew Fatigati was credited with a goal off a deflected Blue Streak shot. However, B-W equalized just six minutes later as sophomore midfielder Justin Peterson (Rochester Hills, Mich./Adams) scored on a direct free kick from 25 yards. The goal was Peterson's seventh of the season.

In the second stanza, senior forward Tyler Leister (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) broke the tie with a low liner from 18 yards to the far post at the 62:19 mark. The goal was Leister's team-leading ninth of the season and put him in a tie for second place all-time for career goals in BW men's soccer history with 31. In addition,Leister now stands third in career points with 75.

The B-W defense preserved the 2-1 margin over the final 28 minutes.

Overall, JCU outshot B-W, 13-12, and out cornered the Yellow Jackets, 4-3.

In goal, sophomore Ryan Hulings (Centerville) played all 90 minutes and made three saves.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, October 30 when they host Muskingum University in a men's and women's soccer doubleheader on Seniors' and Parents' Night.  The women's match is slated to start at 4:30 p.m. with the men's match to follow at 7:00 p.m.

The Oct. 30 doubleheader between B-W and Muskingum will be taped and then shown on a delay basis by regional cable network SportsTime Ohio (www.sportstimeohio.com). The women's game begins at 4:30 p.m. and men play at 7:00 p.m.  The women's game will be shown on October 30 at 9:00 p.m. and again on Monday, November 1 at 5:00 a.m.  The men's game will be aired on Sunday, Oct. 31 at 3:30 p.m. and on Monday, Nov. 1 at 7:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon.
