Strong First Half Lifts Men’s Lacrosse Past Transylvania (Ky.)

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Baldwin Wallace men's lacrosse team defeated Transylvania (Ky.) University by a score of 8-3 in a non-conference game inside Pat Deacon Stadium.

BW (3-1) was led by junior All-OAC midfielder Chad Steinwachs (Buffalo, N.Y./Williamsville North) as he scored a game-high two goals and picked up a career-high four ground balls. In addition, junior midfielders Matt McDowell (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) and Jack Gerlack (Rocky River) each scored a goal and added an assist. Defensively, junior All-OAC goalie Mike Dizonno (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) faced 17 shots and made a season-high seven saves.

Transylvania (1-3) was led by senior goalkeeper Cooper Fogle as he faced 42 shots and made 11 saves.

The Yellow Jackets scored three goals in the first and second quarters to take a 6-0 lead into the locker room at halftime. Gerlack, sophomore attack Mike Nanosky (Medina) and junior midfielder Derek Andrews (Alden, N.Y./Iroquois) scored in the first quarter. Steinwachs, McDowell and junior All-OAC attack Brock Riemenschneider (Rocky River) was assisted by McDowell to close out the scoring with 11 seconds left in the second quarter.

In the third quarter, BW outscored the Pioneers 2-1. Sophomore midfielder Jon Mays (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East) scored his first goal of the season at the 12:34 mark and Steinwachs netted his second of the game off a pass from Gerlack with one second remaining in the quarter.

Transylvania scored the only two goals in the fourth quarter. Freshman long stick midfielder T.J. Toivonen netted a goal at the 11:46 mark and freshman midfielder Thompson Summers closed out the scoring with 3:01 remaining in the fourth.  

BW is back in action on Saturday, March 11 when it travels to Alma, Michigan for non-conference game against Alma (Mich.) College on Bahlke Field at 2 p.m.
