Men’s Lacrosse Scores 16 Unanswered Goals in OAC Victory at Heidelberg

TIFFIN, Ohio –The Baldwin Wallace University men's lacrosse team scored 16 unanswered goals to defeat Heidelberg University by a score of 24-2  in an Ohio Athletic Conference Hoernemann Stadium.

BW (10-2, 5-1 OAC), who scored a season-high tying 24 goals, was led by junior attack Alex Binner (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) and sophomore attack Mike Nanosky (Medina) as they each tallied five points. Binner scored a game-high and career-high tying four goals and added an assist. Nanosky score two goals and added a career-high tying three assists.  Defensively, senior All-OAC face-off specialist Alex Fioritto (Akron/Walsh Jesuit) won a career-high tying 18 face-offs. In addition, freshman goalkeeper Connor Lalime (Buffalo, N.Y./Williamsville East) earned his first career victory and OAC Defender of the Year Josiah Greve (Milford) tallied three caused turnovers and five ground balls.

Heidelberg (3-10, 0-5 OAC) was led by junior goalkeeper Max Rennillo as he made a game-high 21 saves.  Offensively, junior attack Matt Wernerspach and freshman attack Nick Selfridge each scored.

The Yellow Jackets scored the first four goals of the game and the 4-0 run was capped off by an unassisted goal from sophomore midfielder Judson Huston (Delaware/Rutherford B. Hayes) at the 9:12 mark. The Student Princes got on the board and cut the BW lead to 4-1 when Selfridge netted his 30th goal of the year at the 6:01 mark. The Yellow Jackets scored the final three goals of the period with the last coming when senior attack James Wilhelm (Bay Village/St. Ignatius) fed junior All-OAC attack Brock Riemenschneider (Rocky River) who scored his 17th goal of the year to take a 7-1 lead into the second quarter.

In the second quarter, BW opened the scoring when freshman attack Griffin Dunkle (Amherst, N.Y./Central) netted his fourth career goal to make the score 8-1 at the 12:20 mark. Wernerspach cut the Yellow Jackets lead to 8-2 when he scored an unassisted goal for Heidelberg at the 7:09 mark.  BW closed out the scoring in the first half at the 5:03 mark when Dunkle scored his second of the game off a feed from sophomore All-OAC attack Chad Steinwachs (Buffalo, N.Y./Williamsville North) giving the Yellow Jackets a 9-2 at halftime.

In the third, the Yellow Jackets outscored the Student Princes 6-0. Binner led the way as he scored three of his four goals in the stanza.  Steinwachs and junior midfielder Matt McDowell (East Amherst/Williamsville North) and Nanosky each added goals with the last coming from Nanosky with 19 seconds left in the quarter giving BW a 15-2 lead heading into the final 15 minutes of play.

The Yellow Jackets scored the final nine goals of the game. Senior attack Riley Morse (North Prairie, Wis./Mukwongo) led the way with two goals and scored an unassisted goal at the 1:32 mark to close out the scoring. Also scoring  for BW I the final quarter was McDowell, Wilhelm, sophomore midfielder Blake Bower (Lewiscender/Olentangy), freshman attack Justin Presutti (Williamsville, N.Y./South), Huston, senior attack Andrew Spicher (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and freshman midfielder Matt Lowe (Mentor) netted his first career goal.

BW is back in action on Saturday, April 22 when it hosts an OAC game against Otterbein University on Seniors' and Parents' Night on Tressel Field inside George Finnie Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
