BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's lacrosse team was defeated by Ohio Athletic Conference and cross-town rival John Carroll University by a score of 10-8 on Tressel Field inside George Finnie Stadium.
BW (8-2, 3-1 OAC) was led by sophomore attack Mike Nanosky (Medina) as he scored a career and game-high four goals and added one assist for a career-high five points. Along with Nanosky, sophomore All-OAC midfielder Chad Steinwachs (Buffalo, N.Y./Williamsville North) scored one goal and added a career tying and team-high three assists. Defensively, senior defender Michael Dickey (Rocky River) caused three turnovers and collected one ground ball.
John Carroll (6-4, 4-0 OAC) was led by senior attack Declan O'Grady as he scored a team-high three goals. In addition, junior attack Connor Pike added a team-high two assists.
The Yellow Jackets scored the only two goals in the first quarter. Steinwachs opened the scoring as he made a move from behind the cage to beat the Blue Streaks goalkeeper at the 13:18 mark. Nanosky closed out the scoring in the first with an unassisted goal with 2:16 left on the clock.
In the second quarter, John Carroll cut the BW lead in half when junior midfielder RP Whitty scored an unassisted goal at the 14:28 mark. The Yellow Jackets outscored the Blue Streaks 4-1 throughout the remainder of the first half and leading the charge was Nanosky with three goals in the quarter. The last BW goal came at the 3:20 mark when Nanosky assisted junior attack Alex Binner (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) to give the Yellow Jackets a 6-2 lead at halftime.
John Carroll scored all four goals in the third quarter to tie the game at 6-6 heading into the fourth. O'Grady led the way with two goals and senior attack Michael Hubert scored the game-tying goal with 23 seconds remaining in the quarter.
In the fourth, John Carroll score two more unanswered goals capped off by another goal by Hubert off a feed from senior midfielder Keegan Flinter giving the Blue Streaks an 8-6 lead. Junior midfielder Matt McDowell (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) broke the John Carroll scoring run as he scored off a pass from Steinwachs to cut the John Carroll lead to 8-7 at the 9:22 mark. The Blue Streaks took advantage of a three-minute power play starting after at the 9:22 mark and outscored BW 2-1 in final nine minutes.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, April 15 when they travel to Ada for an OAC game against Ohio Northern University inside Dial-Roberson Stadium at 1 p.m.
