BEREA, Ohio – The 8th- ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball team swept an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader against Capital University at Clowson Field in Columbus. The Yellow Jackets (31-8, 12-6 OAC) won the first game, 6-3, and captured the second game, 19-3.
With its two victories, BW broke the school single season record for victories. A year ago, BW had a 30-20 record and made its first-ever appearance in the Division III College World Series. The Yellow Jackets also have won 10-straight games to end the regular season with 12 wins in their last 13 games.
BW must now wait to see if it can gain a spot in next week's OAC Tournament. At 12-6 in league play, the Yellow Jackets need one of three things to happen tomorrow. Marietta College needs to lose once versus Wilmington College or John Carroll University needs to lose twice against Muskingum University or No.19-ranked Ohio Northern University needs to lose twice to No.7-ranked Heidelberg University. Otherwise, BW does not make the four-team OAC tourney.
In the first game, Capital got off to a 2-0 lead in the third inning before BW tied it with two runs of its own in the fifth. Capital took a 3-2 lead with a run in the seventh but BW countered with a four-run eighth to earn the win.
At the plate, BW outhit the Crusaders, 12-4. Junior second baseman Cole Nieto (Brunswick/ Cleveland St. Ignatius) was 3-for-5 with two doubles and a run batted-in. In addition, junior All-OAC designated hitter Hunter Handel (Akron/ Green) and senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC outfielder Zach Ferster (Olmsted Falls) each had two hits. Handel was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a sacrifice fly and Ferster was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI.
On the mound, junior two-time All-OAC pitcher/ 3B Mark Zimmerman (Akron/ Green) pitched a complete game to improve 5-2 this season. He allowed four base hits and three runs (all earned) and struck out 11 and walked two.
In the second game, BW scored all 19 of its runs in the first six innings and coasted to victory.
At the plate, Nieto stayed hot and was 4-for-5 with three runs and two RBI. Freshman Spencer Badia (Bellaire) had his best game as a collegian as he was 3-for-5 with a home run and a career-high six RBI. Handel was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI. Ferster was 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI. Junior Academic All-OAC center fielder John Taylor (Hudson) was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI.
On the mound, freshman left-hander Evan Lovick (Mentor) improved his record to a perfect 5-0. He pitched five and two thirds innings, allowed six hits and one earned run, struck out three and walked two. He was followed by senior Chuck Jones (Kettering/ Fairmont) for an inning and one-third and juniors Alex Albright (North Royalton) and Connor Murphy (Westford, Mass./ Northeast) close out the sweep.
