BW Baseball Team Loses to Keystone (Pa.) in NCAA Tourney to End Season

AUBURN, N.Y. – The second-seeded Baldwin Wallace University baseball team lost to third-seeded Keystone (Pa.) College, 4-2, in its second NCAA Division III East Region Game at Falcon Field. The Yellow Jackets end their season with a school-record 31 victories and a 31-12 record and advanced to the Div. III national tournament for the second straight year.

The Yellow Jackets gained a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when with two outs, senior two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference left fielder Zach Ferster (Olmsted Falls) singled, stole second base and scored on a double by sophomore second baseman Cole Nieto (Brunswick/ Cleveland/ St. Ignatius).  The Giants (32-13) came right back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to lead, 2-1.

In the fourth, junior two-time All-OAC infielder/ pitcher Mark Zimmerman (Akron/ Green) led off with a home run to tie it at 2-2, but Keystone countered with a run of its own to retake the lead, 3-2.

The Giants advanced their lead to 4-2 in the fifth on a single, sacrifice bunt, fly out and a passed ball.

At the plate, BW totaled just four base hits, including two by Zimmerman, compared to six for Keystone.

On the mound, Zimmerman pitched the first seven innings and took the loss to fall to 5-3 The two-time All-OAC infielder allowed five hits and four runs (three earned), struck out nine Keystone batters and walked three others.

He was followed to the mound by junior righty Alex Albright (North Royalton) and junior "stopper" Brandon Cichocki (Walled Lake, Mich./ Central). The duo combined to allow a hit and a walk and struck out one.

A year ago, BW advanced to its first-ever Division III College World Series.
